This Saturday, my sister had a campaign kick-off. For those of you that have followed my journal in the past year, my sister is running for Rosemead City Council. When she ran the first time as a write-in candidate (and she nearly beat the pants off the very popular mayor) one of her major platforms was against a proposed Wal-Mart being built in her very quiet residential neighborhood. Now she's running to get rid of the corrupt old bastards still on the council that approved the Wal-Mart. Well, on the way to the kick-off, I drove by the Wal-Mart site. The store is nearly built and it's just heartbreaking. They're building this Super Wal-Mart next to an elementary school, in front of a golf course, next to a small foreign university, near the Panda Express corporate headquarters, and behind a quiet condo neighborhood. It just doesn't fit. If you go to the Wal-Mart in the City of Industry, that location is fine. That one is near a heavily traveled freeway offramp, a couple car dealerships and some industrial warehouse businesses. But the Rosemead location just doesn't work. It's just so sad.
