Gosh, so behind on lj...
One of my closest friends plays steel guitar in a country band these days and every year or so they play a couple shows in France. Two weeks ago he was just outside Paris, so we took the train across to see him (ALWAYS see your friends play if you can). The show was great, the little suburb was nice, and my wife and I met up with some mates in Paris the following day and enjoyed a good meal out in the evening.
Anyway, after the show my good friend stayed with us in our hotel, drinking wine until the wee hours and catching up. He is, literally, one of the most intelligent and interesting people I know. We enjoyed each other's company so much -- it has been a few years -- that the following day he extended his trip in Europe. He spent some time relaxing in Amsterdam then came over to London to see us for a couple days before heading home.
One day I had to work so sent him to the British Museum on his own. The perfect place for him, a keen student of history. I took the next day off and we spent the morning talking about nanotechnology, the singularity, quantum physics, the nature of entrepreneurial spirit and finding your place versus sitting on the lillypad catching flies of mediocrity in a big company. I love him as a brother. In return for his always valuable insight, I took him to the whisky club, a wine bar, and the gin club. All of which he appreciated. He considers his entire trip a roaring success.
And now he is gone once more. The buffalo must roam.
