Pirates 4

So I saw On Stranger Tides yesterday (not the midnight showing like I would've liked, but the first showing later on in the day).

I loved it. I absolutely loved it. Had the same feel of the original movie. It wasn't BETTER than the first, of course, but it was definitely just below that level of quality. They took out MOST of the ridiculousness of the second movie that I loathed (the wheel scene never sat well with me), but kept enough of the crazy in to bring in the feel of the first and third.

Another thing that I was happy to see was Jack not being all batshit crazy and ditsy most of the time (like he was in most of the second and third). I mean, I understand he had Davy Jones breathing down his neck, but it was a bit over the top sometimes. We got our whimsical, INTELLIGENT Jack back. And in comparison to a fantastically EVIL guy like Blackbeard, you can really see just how much of a GOOD GUY Jack really is (he saved Gibbs from the noose and then you've got the scene with the Mermaids where he was telling everyone to get back for safety).

And then you've got ROMANCE thrown into Jack's life with Angelica. OMG, ANGELICA. Everything that was awesome about Elizabeth and NONE of the things I came to HATE about Elizabeth. She was fierce, she was devoted, she was in love...but she wasn't cold-hearted. I loved her. Absolutely loved her.

The thing with Philip and Serena was hella interesting and I was kinda hoping, when the credits had finished rolling, that it would be something about them. Though the after the credits scene was FANTASTIC. Probably the BEST one, arguably better than the one after AWE (which I loved).

I love how it all worked out in the end - Barbossa got Queen Anne's Revenge and Jack got his beloved Pearl (and Gibbs back as his first mate). I do admit, I missed some of the minor characters (Raghetti and Pintel ESPECIALLY), but I ended up enjoying most of the others (I really liked the Middle Eastern pirate - the one that got the lamp working to attract the mermaids).

AND HOE-MG, THE MERMAIDS. DUDE. DOOOOD. FUCKING AWESOME. Arguably my FAVORITE supernatural element of ALL the movies (more than Tia Dalma/Calypso and even the Kraken). They were truly vicious and badass. Very greek myth. *nods*

All in all, I give it an A-...what it lacked that has made the series so spectacular in the past is the music presence. Maybe it was just the theater I was in, but the music just didn't POP this time around. With a Pirates movie, the soundtrack HAS to be killer. I'll definitely have to see it again (and also get the soundtrack) to see if I get a better feel for it after more viewings.

Because yes, I am already ready to see it again.
