Danny slunk into his office chair; so far it had not been a good day. The two meetings he had today had been rearranged so that they had taken place at the same time and without his knowledge, his boss Mr. Oslek had already been in to berate him about the mid-month figures and now he couldn’t for the life of him concentrate on the document in front of him. As his mobile began to ring out, ‘I’d never make it through without you around,’ for about the ninth time today, Danny hit the reject button. He didn’t feel much like talking.

Danny decided he must need some caffeine in his bloodstream, it was fast approaching 8pm, and he hadn’t taken a break all day. As he walked out of his office he noted that the majority of his colleagues had gone home for the night, given that the only other people he could see were Mr. Oslek yelling at Sarah, a temp, to find the January 2007 figures and Gavin from Accounting, eating a sandwich over his desk for what must have been the fourth time that week.

Danny spent a few minutes in the office kitchen, staring at the tiles -a dusky orange colour with wheat stalks on- before he dared venture out again with his fresh coffee. It appeared that Mr. Oslek had gone home, leaving Sarah in tears at her desk. Even Gavin was heading off; he was pulling on his green parka as Danny passed him.

“Yo Dan. You think you can do me a favour?”

“Depends…”

“Will you lock up when you leave? You’re the last one here.”

“Sure thing.” Danny said swiping the office keys off the desk. “You finally gonna ask Sarah out?”

Gavin blushed, and Danny took that as a yes.

As Gavin was moving away towards Sarah’s desk he turned back to Danny and said something that seemed particularly odd. “Just remember you have a security camera in your office.”

“What man?”

“Just do me a favour and remember that. You don’t want to explain any ‘funny’ videos to Oslek in the morning”

“I don’t plan on breaking the law, Gav.”

Gavin just smirked and headed toward Sarah. Danny was beginning to wonder if the entire office had gone collectively insane.

That was until Danny opened the door to his office and saw him; the raven haired man sitting in Danny’s chair. The man had his arms crossed over his chest and had his feet up on Danny’s desk. He did not look impressed.

“Hey Joey,” Danny said softly, hoping not to antagonise the younger man.

Joe did not crack a smile, instead he picked up Danny’s mobile. “10 missed calls?” Danny searched in his head for an excuse. “Actually I misspoke 10 rejected calls.” Joe slammed his feet off the desk. “What the fuck Danny? Why were you ignoring me?”

“I needed to work. I’ve just been really stressed today.”

“Today?” Joe stood up to his full height, a full two inches taller than Danny. “Danny you’ve been cancelling plans, ignoring my calls and acting really distant for over a month now and I think I have a right to know why.”

Danny couldn’t really fault Joe there.

“I’m sorry baby.” Danny moved around the desk to get closer to Joe. The shorter man reached his arms out to his lover.

“Baby? Are you kidding me?” Joe asked, with fire in his dark eyes. “You think that you can fix this with a half hearted apology and a hug?”

“I thought it was worth a shot.” Danny mumbled, looking dejectedly down at his feet.

The two lapsed into an uncomfortable silence. Danny sat down on the top of his desk, staring up at the younger man he so adored. He saw Joe was holding back tears, trying to stay strong.

“Joey-bear?” The younger man turned his head away, but Danny grasped his hand, stroking tentatively. “I’m sorry,” Danny said without a hint of insincerity. “I got caught up in the promotions…”

“The promotions were all awarded two weeks ago. You’re gonna have to lie better than that.” Joe snarled, but he couldn’t bring himself to let go of Danny’s hand.

“But you know I’m a rubbish liar.” Danny tried to make light of the situation, hoping it would ease the tension, but it failed to make Joe raise a smile.

“Jo…”

“Do you want out?” Joe burst out.

“Out?”

“Out. Out of this. Out of us.” Joe paused to sniff back in tears. “You can’t keep messing me around like this Dan. So if you don’t really want ‘us’, then just tell me now. I’ll pack up and leave tonight.” Joe was still not looking Danny in the eye, almost afraid of what he might see.

Danny dropped Joe’s hand.

Joe knew that at twenty, it was unlikely his heart was breaking, but he began to feel a dull ache, almost immediately afterwards.

Joe moved away from Danny, making towards the door. “Alright…I’ll be gone by the time you get back to ours…yours. That’s if you ever go back. Maybe you’d like to move in here.” Joe gestured to the small office. “I mean, look, your have enough space for a mini fridge on top of your filing cabinet- perfect for beer. You could get you flatscreen up there on the wall. Football and beer! That’s the only reason you ever came home in the first place.” Joe sighed, as he reached for the handle. There was no point in holding back the tears anymore he’d decided, and the wet streaks had plastered his face. “You know, I just wish you’d had the balls to tell me. I don’t know what went wrong with us. Maybe we could have fixed it, but whatever.”

It was becoming harder and harder for Joe to speak, let alone form coherent sentences. He wasn’t even sure Danny was listening, given that the elder of the two had made no noise in a fair few minutes.

Joe pulled open the door.

Danny reached a hand in front of Joe and slammed the door shut. Joe spun round, a questioning look on his tear stained face.

“Joseph Adam Jonas. I never, ever want ‘out’.” Danny forced his lips forwards onto Joe’s, kissing him so hard it hurt them both. Joe stumbled back into the door, his head hitting the wood.
