on becoming cultured Book #2 Alice's Adventures in Wonderland

Many people have at some point in their life seen either the stoned/drunken telling of Alice with Ringo Starr (Ringo being stoned/drunk not the actual story, mind you, though I suppose that is debatable) or maybe even the Disney version. Some may even be so lucky as to have read the book, but for the most part, everyone knows the story of Alice in Wonderland. Right?

Much like Sesame Street, this is a bandwagon upon which I never got the opportunity to hop. I'd always heard about how weird/trippy the storyline is, but attributed this maybe to just the fact that I know a handful of stoners. That aside, I also know this to be considered a classic novel pre-dating my personal favorite, Wizard of Oz, so why not give it a go?

While I don't necessarily find it quite as imaginative as the Oz books, I did find it quite appealing to the math nerd in me. So much of the nonsensical storyline revolves around humor related to math and logic; it's a wonder it's so creative, right? I mean, the entire debate she has with the March Hare and the Hatter is all logic and reverse logic (if you say what you mean, do you mean what you say?). There is also the element that she is not able to think straight while in this Wonderland as evidenced by the fact that she's unable to recite simple multiplication tables correctly.

I can definitely see how this novel and its form led in a new era of nonsensical writing (so I suppose I have Lewis Carroll to 'thank' for Tom Stoppard, ugh). But more than anything else, I think I just wanted to slap Alice. Just tell her to shut the fuck up and go home. This land doesn't make sense to me, everything is weird, I think I'll go into this Rabbit's house unannounced and drink his bottles which have no label. Yeah, cos that makes sense. Pfft, rude.

So this should put me in a good place to see the new Johnny Depp movie this weekend, right?
