Gumby at large

SAN DIEGO - A man in a Gumby suit tried to rob a Rancho Peñasquitos convenience store early Monday but failed to do anything more than lose some change.

Store surveillance video shows the man coming into the store in the green costume with his hands raised over his head walking into the 7-Eleven on Carmel Mountain Road near Paseo Montalban with another man about 12:30 a.m. The costumed character walked to the counter nd told the clerk, “This is a robbery,” San Diego police Detective Gary Hassen said. The employee thought it was a joke and responded that he had to clean and did not have time for him.

The would-be robber insisted that he was serious and then tried to reach in his pocket as if he were looking for a weapon, only to be stymied by the costume. After fumbling around for a few minutes he gave up and walked out leaving behind 26 cents that fell from his pocket, Hassen said.

In the meantime, the man’s friend had already gone outside and was in a white or silver minivan, honking the horn.

The clerk − who was unfamiliar with the Gumby character − thought the incident was a prank and did not report it until 6 a.m. when the store manager came in.

The manager then notified police, Hassen said.

Gumby’s accomplice was described as white, about 18 to 22 years old, 5 feet 6 inches to 5 feet 8 inches tall and between 150 to 160 pounds with black hair. He was wearing a gray cap, a dark hooded sweatshirt and dark blue shorts.

Gumby is tall and green, with a wedge-shaped head.

If apprehended, both men could both face felony charges of attempted robbery, Hassen said.
