Let's see... bridges...

Why bridges?
It has constraints. The connection between the book and x-files. There are strict rules for building a bridge. The components are made up of different metals in different areas of the world. The reason is because of contraction and expansion. Let's say a bridge was built in Alaska, if you take it apart brick by brick and reconstruct it in Mexico, it will become a total disaster. The expansion of the metal will be too great and the bridge will collapse. Like Scully, the bridge is used to one environment. Take it to another environment and unexpected results will follow. (well in this case we do know the results)
Another example of structural failure would be the Tacoma bridge. The original bridge had a new design that caused it to collapse. If I can remember this correctly, the design cause the wind to create a longitudinal resonance, which made the bridge move up and down. And eventually it collapsed.

Also, on a side note. I believe aliens are can be like frat boys. Fun loving aliens. Why do we always think of them as this mighty, highly evolved, and powerful? :-þ
