Nao and Shin had many rituals in their lives; some started as jokes, stayed for a while and then were changed for new ones. Most of them were only little gestures they had with each other, known only by them. They both treasured the memories of those moments.

It was a ritual for them to go out on rainy days, for example. When the sky started to look cloudy and the atmosphere began to get heavy with the promise of rain, they usually put on their sneakers, grabbed a jacket if the weather was cold and went out for a walk.

At first, while they waited for the rain to start falling, they walked through the normally crowded streets that people had cleared because of the upcoming rain. Hand in hand eyeing curiously at the stores and silently admiring the view of the sometimes leafy and sometimes bare branches of the park near their house showing in between the shapes of buildings. They did this with an almost childlike enjoyment, smiling frequently to each other while they walked the same path again, just like the time before.

When the temperature started lowering and the air thickened with the unmistakable smell of rain, Nao usually started to get nervous as he never felt enthusiastic about soaking himself in rain. But, since the soaking was part of their little ritual, he always started talking to ease his apprehension. He could be talking to Shin for a long time and about anything that came to his mind while they approached the park, the next step in their little adventure.

Nao’s chat was like a comforting background sound to Shin, who felt like he was being lead by it to their destination.

Shin wasn’t always listening fully to the words, but he always listened to the flow of Nao’s voice mixing with the sounds of the city and the pleasant melody that they created.

He made sure to let his boyfriend know that he was listening with a little nod here or a brief comment there.

On those moments, Shin felt content. He knew Nao didn’t like rain. He always complained about how cold it felt or how their clothes would be ruined if they kept on exposing them to the water that poured over their heads in their way home.

But still, he stayed with Shin and waited for the rain with him, he never refused to play along and go out for a walk that was sure to end up becoming a cold shower.

And Shin was thankful for that, he thought of it as a display of love.

The rain usually started falling when they were getting into the park, and by the time they reached the small pond and crossed the bridge, they were under a curtain of water that made it difficult for them to see.

At that point, they were very close to their home and Nao allowed Shin the grace of a couple of minutes of just standing there, enjoying the rivers that ran through his body and face.

Nao secretly enjoyed watching Shin and delighting in all the details that he could only appreciate in those moments. The big, openly childish smile that only then he could watch in awe, or the sight of the small body of the guitarist stretching, like he was trying to catch all the rain drops falling on him. And Shin’s laugh. A vibrating laugh of pure happiness that seemed to come from his very core just before Shin turned to Nao again, still smiling and pressed his body against the bassist’s, a sign that he’s ready to go home.

Nao was always glad when they finally got to the safety of their warm apartment, knowing that now it’s his turn of being in the receiving end of the attentions. Shin striped them both, taking his time to dry their bodies, always keeping a trace of that smile and kissing every part of his boyfriend’s body. He lovingly dried Nao’s hair, always careful not to pull on it and even massaging his scalp in the process, Nao sometimes had to hold his laughter since he had to bend more than a little for Shin to reach his head.

Then they moved to the bed and dive under the covers. Sometimes they made love, others they skipped that part and just shared gentle caresses that they love to give to each other’s bodies.

Nao always enjoyed all the tender kisses Shin gave him on those days. They seemed more loving, as if the rain had given Shin the urge or the courage to express his feelings for him.

After a while, Shin always started yawning, tired from all the work he put on himself anytime he wasn’t in what he liked to call their couple time. And when that time came, he curled himself against his lover and slept peacefully.

Nao stayed awake, watching his lover sleep and listening to the rain, safe under their blankets. It was on those days that Nao learned to love the sound of rain.
