A Visit to 21 C

I visited 21 C Museum Hotel on Wednesday for Dan Dutton's Ballads between Life and Death musical performace and gallery show. His paintings are some of the best I've seen showcased in Louisville. 21 C is a really trippy place. If you live in or near Louisville and haven't been you have to check it out! What great artwork and Dutton and his band sang a ballad to go with each painting. I got to meet him after the performace over coffee. As far as his work goes, I especially liked Pretty Polly and Jack Black Davy. It took me awhile to realize that Jack Black Davy was a homoerotic piece. My own reaction really made me think about how inculturated I am to seeing male-female couples in visual media to the exclusion of recognizing same-sex couples. Strange and ironic I know. It was almost as if my mind didn't want to see the two men in the painting and only upon closer inspection was I able to see the more andrognus guy for who he was.
