It wasn't raining men, it was raining rain!

So, yeah my basement flooded due to all the rain... Weird thing is, is that it flooded after all the rain. The worst flooding occured last night...

.

It wouldn't have been so bad had it not been for the whole basement being carpeted and our music and art studios being down there... not to mention the DDR. :(

This means no DDR until the cellar dries out. I'll just have to live with Katamari, Soul Calibur 2, FF X, Kingdom Hearts, and whatever else I want to play on the N64, SNES, Nintendo, and PS1

I'm not sure how many of you know what prevents basement floods, so I'll give you a little lesson.

We have something called a "sub-pump." I'm not too certain if that is its real name... but it works for me... This pumping device is in a hole in our basement (conviently enough beneath some stairs) and when it gets to the point that the pump is completely immersed in water, it turns on and forces all the water out into a pipe, which leads to an opening by our driveway. So is how the system is supposed to work.

Due to last year's unusual amount of snowfall and rapid thaw, our basement was flooded. The sub pump worked its little magic, and we were dry within a week. However, with this winter's precipitation within the water table already, it could not take the massive amounts of rain we recieved over eight days. On day five, we began to notice some moisture coming from the ground and knew it was only a matter of time before we were flooded. By day six, there was visible water, so everything that could be damaged was moved onto the many tables and couches which take up residence down there. On day seven, it was all out war. Water had begun to flow in and the sub pump was unable to keep up. So, I spent the day using a mop to push water into the sub pump's hole to kick start it. The next morning, it became at last sunny and that meant the ground could dry, however that peace would be shattered in the events of that evening. Last night, on day eight, it was total chaos. There was a downpour starting at like eight and continued on to 11:30. We got about an inch of free-standing water in the cellar. So, I hiked up my pajama bottoms, donned a pair of foam sandals, and went to work. I got the pump going three times, which was enough to remove the free-standing water... the basement was saved! I'll admit that after that ordeal, I hummed the Final Fantasy victory song and brandished the mop like a sword.

But for how long? I hear that more rain is on the way! So it seems like my work will never be done... If I get completely flooded (i.e. up to my shins or something), I'll be sure to take pics of it and post them...

Oh! If you guys get the chance, go check out the saco and its dams! Especially the Skeleton Hollis-Side. It's crazy full right now and if there is any more water that falls within the next few days, they say that the integrity of a few dams will be comprimised... So before we all die by drowning, go check out the craziness that mother nature is inflicting on man-made structures!
