Band I was given by Matt "Grettir" (what's the story there, Matt-whose-last-initial-as-far-as-I-know-is-'H'?): P. J. Harvey

Song I love: I own three of her albums (_To Bring You My Love_, _Is This Desire_, and _Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea_), and I can listen to any of them over and over -- but the song that really stands apart from the others is, "You Said Something."

Maybe it doesn't have the critical eye on people and society that gives her work its sharp edge, but it captures so well the feeling of remembering certain people and conversations years down the line. Like another of my favorite songs, Innocence Mission's "Happy, the End," she leaves an ambiguity right at the center of her lyrics and weaves her music like a border around that empty space, inviting sentimentality and challenging it all at once.

Song I like: "To Bring You My Love."

I could listen to this over and over.

Song I hate: you know, I'm a musical lightweight. Some of the songs on _TBYML_ are more raw and, frankly, yelley (it's a real word! a palindrome, even!) than I can really enjoy on their own. But the song that I have to program out of listening to _SFTC,SFTS_ is "The Whores Hustle and the Hustlers Whore" -- it's a weak song to begin with, and it comes off to me as disrespectful of actual sex workers. No linky.

Comment on this, and I'll do my best to give you your own band to praise/flog!
