Interesting stuff. I think she's right, and it may indirectly explain why the best science writers are generally scientists who have a talent for writing rather than writers with an interest--but usually a minimal education--in science. Truth and story can work together, but if you have to choose one, in science writing truth must always be the goal, and a lot of storytellers can never make themselves let go of the temptation to put story first.
That being said, good popular science writing is a skill distinct from good science, or even good academic science writing, and an awful lot of scientists who have important stuff to say could benefit from collaboration with people whose primary job is putting words together.
