So, I was reading a chapter on radical individualism in the U.S. and how it could possibly lead to the demise of democracy in our nation. Radical individualism is where people consistently look to themselves first and look to satisfy their own wants and needs and don’t think about the needs of the society they live in, in turn, cutng themselves off from the rest of society.
Well, this chapter got me thinking. I actually believe what this guy, Hudson, is saying. As somewhat believing in existentialism, I think that Radical individualism explains a lot of things, such as the super high divorce and suicide rates, why people with plenty can’t spare a penny for the homeless man, and why students shoot up their schools. We are all isolated from each other. We feign interest in each other’s lives. We pretend that we are selfless, but in all actuality, we are not. I think we truly need to work to extend ourselves to each other. We need to reach helping hands, not because it makes us look good, but rather because we feel a need to be connected to our fellow human. There needs to be more love in the world.
