So I ordered the two Brave Saint Saturn Cds through interlibrary loan. I have kept meaning to listen to them and see what it's like. Pretty much Five Iron Frenzy without the horns. And with more electronic doo dad sounds. And more angst. Lots more angst. First CD I got is actually the 2nd Brave Saint Saturn CD "The Light of Things Hoped For."
Except there are some touching lyrics and stuff. The whole concept album thing is interesting. I like the hope to lost hope repeated thing. It's hard to explain.
"Sun Also Rises" is a nice song. Feels somehow bittersweet or maybe that's retrospect.
The power seems to come from the set of "Binary" "Enamel" and "Anastasia." I'm a sucker for lyrics like "blessed are the drifters, the stars that die / whose light expires, before goodbyes" (Binary) "and so here's to me saying "fare-thee-well" / and when you hear this song I hope it hurts like - " (Enamel) but then I like Eve 6 after all. And Enamel having in the background similar twinkling sounds to Binary is a nice move but the song is a bit heavy handed...though probably intentionally to show the evolution. (Taking it in context of a song like "Ugly Day" from "All the Hype..." it's an interesting evolution.) Anastasia has a nice relation to the other two and closes the theme nicely.
But it seems to kind of lose focus after that. Having a good opening and three catchy related tunes doesn't help the whole space thing. It gets tired. And hearing Reese say "Destroy! Divide!" in Titan just makes me think of Strong Bad and his death metal guidelines.
"Estrella" and "Heart Still Beats" are nice songs, but here's where the concept of the concept album dissolves and it gets muddled and he admits that he wrote Estrella in his basement and it somehow got on this album. We bring back the bells, the moon, and the color blue for Baby's Breath but it already 8 minutes lost. "Oh yeah, concept album!" By "I Fell Away" I'm kind of tired of the electronic sounds that replace the horns, but the speed pickup is nice. And considering their target age group Icarus references are probably cool. But then the speed of the album grinds to a crushing halt. "Recall" is slow, "Atropes" is a poem over music, and "Daylight" just doesn't bring the album to a close well. It's too long and meanders a bit and Reese should stop screaming. This is not metal. It's a shame because FIF had some awesome album closers like "Every New Day" "Eulogy" and "On Distant Shores."
So...I'll see what the first CD is like. I'm certainly keeping the first four songs (It has non song items like "Mecury" and "Gemini") and I am looking forward to the first CD coming in.
Am I all Indie now that I just talked about a band no one has ever heard of?
