Vala couldn’t keep the desperation out of her voice as she leaned into the concierge desk yet again. “Has Doctor Jackson-”
The gentleman who had been so kind all the other times she had already inquired cut her off, albeit as politely as he had sounded the last time she’d pestered him. “No ma’am, he has not left any message.”
Pouting, Vala pushed off the countertop and sighed loudly. “Okay…” She snatched up her clutch and the glass of champagne that had accompanied her from the bar. “I’m sorry to have bothered you…again.” She gave him a pathetic little smile before turning to head back to the bar.
“He’ll regret being late the moment he sees you.” The gentleman offered, having noticed how gorgeous she had looked the first time she had sauntered up to his desk.
Vala looked back with an even more pathetic smile. “Thank you.” She once more turned towards the bar and made her way into the sunken, darkened environment. “Doubt he’ll notice anyway.” She muttered into her glass, draining it dry while trudging down the wooden steps.
Her high-heeled feet carried her back to the same stool she had been occupying for what seemed like an eternity. The bartender noticed her return as she threw herself onto the stool and tossed her clutch onto the bar top.
“Still a no show, huh?” He questioned, his expression mixed between a grimace and a hopeful smile, while filling her glass back up.
Vala gave him an appreciative look for the champagne and a roll of the eyes for his inquiry. “Not that this surprises me.” She took a hearty sip of the bubbly liquid. “He usually forgets anything that has nothing to do with his precious rocks.” The second sip drained the cup yet again. “Namely me.”
The bartender, who Vala had come to know as Phil, topped her off once more. “Only an idiot would ignore someone like you.”
She offered a flirty grin, though it lacked anything that would’ve been in it just a year before. “Ignorant is more apropos in this situation.” Her grey eyes stared into the golden drink. “He’s no idiot, unfortunately.”
Vala tossed back the contents in one gulp, swallowing hard as it all rushed down her throat. She squinted one eye and stared through the glass at her new friend. “This is the expensive stuff, right?” When he confirmed, she popped open her eyes and tilted her head. “And you put it on his tab, yes?”
“Anything you order here will be charged to your boyfriend’s room.” Phil answered.
“Husband.” Vala mumbled, dropping her head into one hand, holding out the glass with the other. At Phil’s quirked eyebrow as he refilled once more, she sighed. “He’s my husband.” She emphasized the last word dramatically.
Phil frowned. “But there’s no ring…”
Shaking her head, Vala sniffed. “Oh, there’s a ring.” She set down the glass, making sure to take a quick sip first, to fumble in her clutch. When she found it, she slipped the ring onto the appropriate finger and held it out for Phil to see. “There…is a ring.”
“Wow, that looks-”
“Expensive?” Vala filled in and he nodded. She huffed. “Yes, it is…” She went back to resting her cheek in her hand, her attention now on the sparkling piece around her finger. “He knows how much I like pretty, shiny things.”
Frowning, she sat back and snatched the glass back up. “Knows too much about me…” She grumbled before drinking. Vala smacked her lips together after swallowing. “You know,” Her wide, expectant eyes turned on the bartender. “Today is our anniversary.”
Before Phil could reply to the announcement, Vala babbled on. “That’s right! I’ve been married to the same man for an entire year now.” She frowned and stared at Phil like he knew it sounded crazy. “Can you believe that? Me - a year?!”
Her expression grew sad as she glanced back at the ring. “A year…and he’s not around.” Vala shook her head minutely, pressing the glass to her lips and closing her eyes as she sipped. She opened her eyes to stare at the emptiness within the cup again. “Now I’m here drinking champagne all alone…”
“Not alone.” Phil offered a smile, taking a hold of Vala’s hand while pouring more champagne.
Vala giggled at first, half out of gut reaction and half out of the lightheadedness she’d begun to feel. The smile turned into a slight frown when she realized Phil’s thumb was stroking over her hand in a particular way.
“This stuff…” She extracted her hand and waved the glass back and forth. “Is really good.” There was an attempt at regaining the smile as she took a small sip while watching Phil over the edge of the glass.
He nodded, and winked, in response and Vala swallowed down the rest quickly. “But I think I’ve…” She stopped as a small hiccup escaped unannounced. “Had enough.”
Vala gingerly placed the glass down and fumbled for her clutch. She froze as Phil placed his hand on hers. Blinking to clear her vision, Vala realized he had an all too familiar look in his eyes.
“I’m just gonna…” She rose from the stool, using all her willpower to step away from the bar and not stumble. “Go see if my husband…” The willpower seemed to be failing her and her steps faltered when Phil began to make his way around the bar, towards her.
His expression was sweet…sickly sweet. “Hey, you look like you need some-”
“Help?” Vala backed into an immovable, yet wonderfully familiar, object just as a voice she was longing to hear interrupted Phil’s too friendly words. “Yeah, that’s covered.”
She turned unsteadily to face her sweet savior. Despite being completely overjoyed at his rather impeccable timing, the aggravation she’d been harboring for him all evening reared its ugly head. “You’re late.”
Daniel tilted his head. “Seems like I’m right on time, actually.” He leaned in and placed a distracting kiss to her lips. It was short and simple, and he pulled back licking his lips. “And it seems like you started the festivities without me.”
“You said seven.” Vala pouted, her eyes wide and hurtful. “I was lonely.”
He nodded knowingly. “I said seven knowing you like to take your time, figuring you’d be ready by eight.” Looking at his watch over her shoulder, he shrugged. “Eight-fifteen, so just about on time.”
Vala furrowed her brow and looked down, frowning deeply as the floor seemed to be moving in waves at her feet. “I got ready early.”
“I see that.” Daniel tilted her head up with a finger to her chin. “Must say, it’s a first I didn’t expect.”
“You’ve been so frustrated with…” She paused, managing to catch herself before stuff she wasn’t supposed to share in public slipped free. “Why we’ve been here, and I’ve already made you so upset, and I didn’t want this night to be about bad things, so I got ready when you told me…and…I messed up.”
Daniel shook his head. “No you didn’t.” He brushed the back of his finger across her cheek. “This is just what we get for trying to think like each other.” He grinned.
Closing her eyes, Vala fell into him. With her arms loosely wrapped around his waist, she pressed her face into the side of his neck. “I feel dizzy.” It was as a much an expression of her physical state as it was a reply to his remark.
“You’re drunk.” Daniel’s sigh was somewhere between exasperation and affection.
Vala snorted lightly. “That…” Another hiccup escaped without warning. “Too.” She leaned away from him, thankful for Daniel’s firm hands at the small of her back. “What else was I supposed to do but drink champagne?” She pointed a finger at him. “It is my anniversary you know.”
“Our anniversary.” Daniel corrected. “And the champagne is supposed to wait until both parties in the relationship are present.”
“I wasn’t alone.” Vala clarified, turning in Daniel’s embrace to point at Phil, who was watching warily from his spot back behind the bar. “Phil’s my new friend.” With Daniel’s appearance and all the champagne she’d drank in such a short period of time kicking in, Vala seemed to have forgotten the man had been coming onto her.
Giving Phil a look that needed no explanation, Daniel nodded. “I noticed.”
Vala turned back to face her husband. “He kept me company until you got here…” She leaned into him again, hugging him. “And now you’re here.”
“I am.” Daniel began to lead Vala out of the bar, throwing one last withering glare to the bartender who had let his wife get in this state. “And now we’re going to our room.”
Leaning heavily into Daniel’s side as he helped her fumble up the steps, Vala pouted. “But I thought we were going out?” She put a bit of whine into her voice for emphasis.
“We were,” Daniel nodded, stopping in the lobby. He kept one hand on Vala while fishing his cell phone out of his leather jacket. “Until you charged a hundred dollar bottle of champagne to our room and proceeded to drink it all on your own.”
She frowned as he dialed and brought the phone to his ear. “How’d you know it was a hundred dollars?”
The wink he gave let her know that despite his words, Daniel wasn’t really upset with her. “Because I know my wife.”
Giggling, which turned into one of those hiccups as it tapered off, Vala stepped up close to him. “I know her too.” She breathed out sharply through her nose as Daniel put a silencing finger to her lips.
“Hello, this is Daniel Jackson.” Daniel spoke into the phone, watching his wife sway in place on her obscenely high-heels. “Yeah, I’m afraid I’m going to have to cancel on the horse tonight.” He watched Vala’s eyes get really wide and pressed his finger more firmly against her lips to keep her from commenting. “Can I reschedule for tomorrow night, then?”
Vala waited until Daniel had nodded, said his thank yous and goodbyes. Then she couldn’t keep her mouth shut any longer. “You got me a horse?” She asked, emotion coloring her words.
Licking his lips, Daniel looked down at her over the edge of his glasses. “I got you a carriage ride through the park…” He smiled at the excited and appreciative look she got at the reveal, pocketing his phone. “And dinner at a restaurant that I’ve had reservations at for months now.”
He hated to have to deprive her of the pleasant things he had just described, but Daniel could see Vala was far from being in the right condition to enjoy them properly. Champagne had never really been a drink she could handle.
“But that’ll have to wait,” He gently wrapped an arm around her waist, drawing her into his side and leading her over to the elevator. “Until tomorrow night.”
“But I wanna ride the horse.” Vala mumbled into his chest. She leaned away from him as he moved to push the elevator call button. Daniel grabbed her firmly by the wrist to keep her from toppling backwards. “I can ride the horse!”
He smiled, and the sweetness behind it was genuine. “You wouldn’t be riding a horse; you’d be riding in a carriage pulled by a horse.”
She beamed. “And I can do that.” The nod she added to it had her stumbling into his arms.
“Don’t think so.” Daniel murmured into her hair, arms wrapped tightly around her. He pulled back a little when she looked up at him, grey eyes wide as a doe’s and in full on plea mode.
“I promise I won’t get sick.” Vala smiled innocently.
Daniel laughed. “Yeah, the last time you said that, I had to pay to get Mitchell’s interior cleaned.” He looked down at her with loving annoyance. “Not happening tonight.” Keeping a firm hold on her, he guided Vala backwards in to the suddenly arrived elevator.
Dropping her head against his chest, Vala huffed loudly.

Daniel emerged from the bathroom to find her swaying by the window in the dress shirt he’d just taken off before getting in the shower. She was staring down as if she could see the streets many, many stories below. There was a disgruntled look on her face.
Shaking his head in mild amusement, he moved over towards her and wrapped her in his arms. “Come on,” He tugged backwards, gently easing her away from the window slowly. “You’re not going to see any carriages from up here.”
Vala let Daniel guide her around and over towards the bed, though she was still pouting along the way. “Could’ve done it.” She mumbled, her feet doing their best not to cooperate with her. She flopped back on to the bed when she was close enough.
“Sure you could’ve.” He leaned over her, placing a kiss on her nose.
She wrinkled it and watched him go to the window and pull the thick curtains closed. Vala ungraciously pushed herself into a sitting position. “I could…” She pouted, staring at the undulating floor.
Daniel turned back, seeing her swaying where she sat, her eyes blinking towards the floor. He smiled softly, making his way to her. He knelt down and placed his hands on her knees.
“You can’t even see straight.” He told her with amusement and affection. “My tipsy little fruitcake.”
As if on cue, one of the hiccups that had been betraying her since Daniel had appeared, escaped and she let out a huff of air. Vala leaned forward, falling gracelessly against him. Soothingly, Daniel rubbed her back while lifting her up and moving her back to a horizontal position on the bed. Once she seemed settled, he climbed over her and switched off the one lamp on the bedside table that had been illuminating the room. The blue glow of the tv filled the space around them.
Before he could settle back completely, Vala flopped against his side in an uncoordinated heap. Daniel flipped through the channels, waiting for her to find a comfortable position. When she did, she buried her face into his chest.
“World is spinny.”
Daniel frowned in mild concern, hoping she wasn’t going to get sick. He rubbed her back some more. “Hey, look what I found for you.” He said softly, motioning to the tv with his head when she peeked one bleary eye his direction.
She turned her attention towards the set, and smiled outright with her current lack of inhibitions. “Mmmm, Nemo.” Vala managed to snake her hand up under Daniel’s shirt, rubbing her chilled fingers over his warm torso. He didn’t even flinch anymore when she did it and that made her smile even brighter.
“Good husband.” She whispered, leaning up to capture his lips in a kiss. The side of his mouth was the closest she got.
Daniel pressed a kiss to her hair as her attention returned to one of her favorite movies. “Happy anniversary, sweetie.” All he got in return was a sleepy sort of murmur and he knew she’d be asleep before the fish even reached the ‘EAC’. Quite the ending to a rather uneventful one year anniversary.
He sighed and cuddled her close to his side. Things hadn’t gone like he had planned at all, but with Vala Mal Doran as his wife they rarely ever did.
And Daniel knew he’d be satisfied with many more anniversaries just like it.
