“Among the Living” (1/1)
by Lisa Michelle
“Well, it’s been almost two months and here you sit in this
boring apartment,” Vala said. “You need to get out among the
living, darling.”
Daniel looked up from the book he was reading to see Vala
standing at his bedside filing her nails. He closed his eyes.
“This is just a dream. This is just a dream.”
“Oooh, you’ve had dreams about me.” She sat down on the edge
of the bed. “Do tell. Were they R-rated? In that case, tell me
every naughty detail.”
Daniel opened his eyes. She was still there wearing her green
uniform with her hair in pigtails.
Vala looked down at her clothes as if she knew what he
was thinking. She slid her nail file into the left pocket of
her shirt. “This is your hallucination and you can’t come up
with anything sexier than this uniform.” She shook her head.
“But that’s beside the point right now. I’m here to tell you you
need to get a life.”
“I’m fine.” He went back to his reading. “Go away.”
“No, you’re not, darling,” she said. “You only leave this
place for groceries. That means you aren’t having any fun.”
“I’m reading,” he pointed out. “That’s fun.”
She looked at the cover of the book. “Books about ancient
languages? Don’t you know all that by now?” She tried to grab
the book out of his hands.
Daniel moved the book out of her reach. “For a hallucination
you’re quite bossy,” he said. “Then again why would things change.”
“You conjured me up for a reason,” she told him. “I bet it’s because
you miss me.”
“No, I don’t.” Daniel went back to his reading.
“I think you do.” Vala looked around the small bedroom. There
weren’t many furnishings. Forgoing decorations and pictures in
favor of books and more books. “Will you at least buy a TV?
What are you supposed to talk to people about if you have no TV?”
“I don’t need a TV,” he replied, not looking away from his
book. “I’m fine with my books.”
“What about the History Channel? Aren’t you curious as to what
kind of programming they’ve got in this reality?” she said.
“No, not really,” he said quickly before lowering the book and
looking at her. “Well, maybe a little curious.”
“How about that neighbor of yours?” she asked, changing the
subject.
“Lou?” he said.
“No, silly, the one from across the hall,” she said.
“Oh, Michelle,” he said. “What about her?”
“Have you tried talking to her?” Vala asked.
“I said hi to her once,” he replied. “However, I’m sure she has a
boyfriend.”
“Aha!” Vala pointed an accusing finger at him. “So you have
thought about her.”
“She’s pretty, but -“
“But what?” she said.
“My leg,” he replied, looking down at the missing part of
his lower leg. “Besides, I caught her staring at me once.”
“That’s because you’re hot,” she told him.
“No, it’s because of the cane.” He looked at it resting against
the bedside table, ever vigilant, waiting until it was needed. At
first the cane was an annoyance, but lately he relied on it more
and more. If he didn’t have it, his limp was more pronounced.
Having the cane meant that people stared at him a bit less and
kept the questions to a minimum.
“How about making up a story about your injury? Like you
were searching this underground tomb and found a bunch of
treasure. But these ninjas came up behind you and tried to steal
it from you. You fought hard, but weren’t able to escape unscathed,
hence the leg -“ she suggested.
Daniel set the book aside. “Okay, first of all.” He held up one
finger. “Archaeologists don’t steal treasure. We find artifacts and
study and catalogue them.”
“I’ve never seen Indiana Jones cataloging an artifact,” she
commented.
“That’s because he’s a fictional character,” he reminded her.
“You’re the one watching too much TV.”
“Alright, you found the treasure and had to give it back to its
rightful owner -a beautiful dark-haired princess, for example.
Feel free to call her Vala,” she said. “Oh, no, make it that you
had to save the princess from the bad guys and lost your leg
because of that. Women love heroes who face danger and risk
their lives for -“
“Okay, Vala, you’re missing the point here.”
“I’m trying to help you, darling,” she said. “You should be
thanking me for the -“
A knock at the door interrupted the conversation.
Vala stood up. “It’s her,” she whispered, looking towards the
door.
“How do you know?” he said, scooting himself to the edge of
the bed.
“Go answer it,” she said. “Ask her out to dinner or a movie.
Get to know her. Don’t make yourself lonelier in this life than
you already are.”
Daniel reached for his prosthesis next to him on the bed
and put it on. He got up from the bed, grabbed the cane and
walked to the door. He looked through the peephole. Vala was
right. It was her.
“That’s my Daniel,” she said softly.
He swore he felt Vala kiss him on the cheek before he opened
the door.
