Confessions of an Ugly Betty Fan

Ok, I had hoped that my first post to the community would be one of the short ficlets I’ve been struggling over all summer, but they are moving at a glacial pace. In the meantime, I have found another way to express my love for Ugly Betty…

Does anybody remember the Ugly Betty “Last Chance” Auction that ABC used to have linked to on their website?

So, I saw a mention of it here on the community earlier this summer and went to scope it out. Got tempted enough to create my very own eBay account and put in a bid. I think my first bid was for the shirt and tie Daniel wore in the finale when he set fire to the release form and then Betty bandaged his hand. But someone wanted that shirt and tie more than I did, and it ended up going for twice as much as I wanted to pay. So I kept looking and eventually tried again. Which brings me to the item that is currently sitting in a plastic bag inside a box on top of my dresser.

“Hello, Goodbye”, scene after Betty’s Goodbye party where Daniel looks through the book and later takes it to Wilhelmina, handing the company over to her.

I still can’t believe I own something that Eric Mabius wore. On tv. Eric Mabius. Oh, sorry, got distracted by those eyes again. Anyway, it was funny, before the box arrived I kept referring to it as “Eric”, as in “Eric has been shipped out.” or “Eric is on the Fed Ex truck!” or “Eric is supposed to arrive today.” Until I decided that sounded a little creepy and switched to calling the wardrobe “Daniel”.

So, there I was, with my little piece of UB history. And quite happy with it, too! But I still felt like a bit of a creeper for only getting a Daniel item, so of course I had to look for a Betty item to go with it. And there it was, the black purse she wore in the last scene in London. I thought, how cool would it be to have that. And then I could post it on the B&B community, the purse that is featured in the header! And folks, for 10 brief shining moments that purse was mine. But then in the last minute or so of the auction someone swooped in with some ridiculously high maximum bid. But I tried. I tried valiantly until I was bidding twice as much as I wanted to spend. Luckily, for my bank account at least, I lost out in the last few seconds. I just get so competitive. I’m telling you, eBay auctions are a dangerous place!

So, I kept looking. I think I bid on a blue bird necklace of Betty’s and possibly a purse that I wasn’t too excited about, but, again, people were willing to spend a heck of a lot more than I am. And then I saw these really cute shoes of Hilda’s. And since they were my size, and not those teeny, tiny little shoes America wears, I went for it. Of course, I forgot that I’ve never been good at walking in heels, let alone 4 inch stilletos. But whatever, aren’t they gorgeous?

I’ve got to give it up to Ana Ortiz. I don’t know how those actresses managed to remember their lines and emote and everything while tottering around on these suckers.

But I still needed a Betty item, so every week or so, usually just a couple of hours before the auction would end on Tuesday, I’d remember to go look through the week’s offerings. And last Tuesday I saw the cutest little purse that was stated as one Betty carried in “Level 7 With Me”. There was even a picture of her in a red coat at what looked like the cult headquarters with the purse dangling on her arm. So I went for it, and by some miracle, managed to get it without having to go too far out of my comfort zone. The purse arrived on Saturday, but the label and the Certificate of Authenticity listed it as being used in “London Calling”.

You know, I really thought the highlight of my collection would be the Daniel shirt and tie because, did I mention Eric Mabius wore it? This purse is really cute and all (and fun to pet, it’s some sort of animal hide), and I loved carrying it into work today and getting the compliments, but how could it top the Daniel shirt for cool factor?

By leaving a little surprise inside…

Yes, that’s part of the script for “London Calling”. It even has the call sheet for the scenes they were shooting that day. It mostly contains the dialogue for Betty and Gio’s two conversations in London. All other scenes were exed out. So, considering that and the fact that it was tucked up inside Betty’s purse I’m going to assume that this is America Ferrera’s script. Woo-to-the-Hoo!
I wish I had managed to get an item that either Daniel or Betty had in a scene together. (Can you imagine if I had managed to get the black purse from the Trafalgar Square scene and it had a script tucked inside?? Gah! I hope whomever got that purse appreciates it!). But I think my days of bidding on UB items are done. Got to leave something for the rest of the fans! If only I can stay away from that auction site...

So thus concludes my very first official post to the community (somebody owes me Chapter 5!)

P. S.  If I got too wordy, then just be sure to check out the pictures...
