CHAPTER 10 - FINAL (2/2)
Masaki closed his eyes while massaging his temples. He had little resistance to alcohol, reason why he never drank more than one drink each night. That night, though, he had surely gone beyond his limits. Not enough to get drunk, but certainly enough to sport an annoying headache.
“Are you alright? You drank too much, didn’t you?”
He opened his eyes once again in order to face Jun, who was standing a few inches ahead of him. It was impossible not admire the beauty and the charm of his best friend. He had always fancied dressing smartly and, with the years, and the considerable increase on his bank account, his style had become more refined.
At that moment, Jun was wearing an Armani slim grey suit, a fair shirt and a purple tie with grey stripes. To crown his elegant looks, he was wearing a very discreet belt that matched his Salvatore shoes. Not to mention his hair, already becoming grey around the temples, which was impeccably cut and combed in a way that mixed classic and modern.
“Just a little bit” he answered, aware that there was no use to lie. In those last weeks, his friend had been watching him close, worried about his disappointment with Sho. The oldest man had even suggested him to take a break at work, so he could avoid bumping into the man, but he refused it. He wasn’t a child anymore, unable to tell apart his personal and professional lives.
Jun examined him with attention; probably trying to see if he was saying the truth. He didn’t seem very convinced, but he didn’t push it anyway.
“I just need to close the register for tonight and settle a tiny management issue, but it won’t take more than an hour. Will you wait for me to go home or would you rather go ahead without me? I can call a cab.”
“I’d rather wait for you, Jun. I’m fine. Besides, I have a few things to organize for tomorrow as well.”
“Fine, then. I’ll look for you as soon as I finish, OK?”
Masaki nodded and went to his dressing room. He sighed before opening his door and facing Sho. No matter how professional he tried to be, it was hard to stay in the same place as him and pretend not to be affected by it.
Of course he missed his touches and his kisses, but it wasn’t only these what made him burn with longing in his sleepless nights. He missed his smile, the way he tried to squeeze him in his schedule, his friendships and, in a way, in his life.
It was a shame that they had such different opinions regarding relationships and that he wasn’t interested in having a sex buddy. He had already faced something similar with Hideo, when he had refused to share the man with his wife, like his ex-boyfriend had proposed. He refused to give up on the idea of having a fulfilling relationship, even for Sho.
He opened the door and walked straight to his closet in search of something to dress. In the opposite side, he noticed Sho was already dressed and busy taking off his make up.
“You’ve changed your routine at the pole. It was great” he remarked, while dressing a t-shirt, in an obvious attempt to sound casual.
“Thanks” Sho answered, also in a neutral tone, without stopping what he was doing.
Masaki nodded and sat on one of the chairs in order to take off his heavy boots and the soaked socks, without waiting for their talk to continue, like usual in those two weeks. Usually, after getting to the dressing room after work, they would just exchange a few polite words, get dressed fast and follow separated paths. Therefore, he couldn’t help a surprise look on his face when he heard the other man sighing.
“It’s a pity that it wasn’t as good as your performance…” his tone was sarcastic. “You seemed inspired tonight. Were you showing off for someone in particular?”
“No, nothing of the sort” Masaki bothered answering, searching for the man’s eyes throough the mirror. “My job is to show off to all clients. I don’t perform exclusively for any of them.”
“Oh, I see” Sho threw the wiping tissue he had used in the trash bin. “Your exclusive performances are all made outside T.A.B.O.O., right? I thought I heard you saying you weren’t interested in casual sex…”
“Casual sex?” he repeated, enraged by the man’s despiteful tone. “What the hell are you talking about?”
The other man gave him a sly smile and turned around to face him.
“Will you deny that you went out with Toma yesterday?”
“No, I won't” he had no reason to do so. “Toma and I had dinner together and then we went to watch one of his friends on a play.”
He couldn’t identify the look Sho casted him after his answer. It was as if he was expecting him to deny it. Standing up, the man approached him.
“And where has he taken you then?” Sho held his arm, forcing him to his feet. “To his house? To a luxurious hotel?”
Masaki felt his blood coming to his face and his body start to shake with annoyance. What was Sho intending to get with that attitude? Acting like a jealous boyfriend? Wasn’t he the one who said they had no strings attatched? Then, why was he looking at him as if demanding an explanation?
Wrathful, Masaki faced him in defiance. He could have denied, after all, it had actually been just a friendly date: good food, cheerful talk and an enthralling play to crown it. He had only stepped in a theatre on his teens and the invitation seemed quite tempting. He was in need of a distraction, after all. It never crossed his head that the date could have any romantic content, neither had Toma tried anything in that sense.
However, he wouldn’t give Sho such satisfaction. He owed him no explanations.
“And what does it have to do with you?”
“Because you said you loved me!” he yelled in return, pulling him to his chest.
Before he was able to react, Masaki felt his lips being taken in a possessive kiss. He tried to fight at first, but it was just a matter of time before his body lost the stiffness of anger and his mouth started to move hungrily towards Sho’s, trying to follow his rhythm. He felt the pressure of the other man’s body softening as well and his arms encircling his waist, pulling him even closer.
He could have blamed the extra doses he had drank with Takahashi-san, but actually, he was unable to fight his longing and his desire. He was totally conscient when he let Sho press him against the counter. Without stopping the kiss, the stripper pulled him up, making him sit over it before taking a place between his legs.
Masaki threw his head behind, moaning low when he felt Sho’s lips traveling over his shoulder, his neck and the lobe of his ear, until it got back to his lips. He shivered when he felt Sho’s erection rubbing against his own. He embraced him with his legs, bringing him closer, moving with him in search of more friction.
“I’ve missed you…” Sho whispered in his ear, his voice hoarse with desire.
“Sho-chan…” he was about to say something in return, but was unable to do so, his words exchanged by the uncontrollable moans caused by the delicious sensation in his lower parts. He was a few seconds of coming just with the friction of their members, even though they were both covered by the fabric of their clothes.
He knew Sho was also very close, so he pulled him for another kiss, before embracing his neck and sinking his teeth in his shoulder. He closed his eyes and waited for his body to explode in satisfaction, but he opened it soon after, distracted by the insisting vibration over the counter.
More out of instinct than of curiosity, he looked at the cellphone beside him and froze immediately in face of the name blinking in the screen.
Regaining his selfcontrol and his dignity, he pushed Sho away.
“What…?”
“Your cellphone” he said, getting to his feet. “You shall not let Sato-san waiting.”
Only then the man noticed his device vibrating.
“Masaki...”
“Don’t get closer!” he said, picking up his t-shirt from the floor. He was angry, specially with himself. He shouldn’t have given in to his desire and acted like a fool once again.
“Masaki, listen to me…” Sho held his shoulders, forcing him to face him.
“You don’t have to explain anything to me, Sho. You had already made your point clear before… I… Please, just go. Sato-san is waiting” he said, without hiding his disappointment. “And I don’t want to be the warming-up for your fuck tonight.”
For a few seconds, Sho stared at him with an undefined expression; a mix of hurt, doubt and anger. He still hesitated a bit before picking his phone and his bag from the counter and, turning on his heels, leaving the dressing room with no further words.
Only then Masaki allowed himself to collapse, feeling like a fool. Would he never learn the lesson? Why had he let himself go? Nor even with Hideo he had relapsed like that. That was when he realized that what he felt for his ex-boyfriend was nothing compared to the intensity of his feelings for Sho.
He loved the man so much it hurted.
“Damn it!” he punched the counter, frustrated, hurt and annoyed. Then, he approached the mirror. He placed his hand over it and breathed deep, trying - in vain - to cast away the tears that insisted on running down his face. “Please… take me away from here… Let me go back home…”
*******************************************
Sho vented, running his hands through his hair as soon as he left the dressing room. He was more than angry; he was frustrated for being such a coward.
He could have explained that he had nothing scheduled with Sato-san.
He could have said that, apart from the nights the entrepreneur went to T.A.B.O.O, he had not seen him since the night Masaki caught the man leaving his apartment.
He could have told him that the only place he would rather be was beside him.
He should have said he loved him back.
However…
He was just unable to say a word, more so when he faced those saddened eyes. Therefore, he decided to run away one more time.
“Fuck!” he kicked the wall before resting his forehead over the solid surface in search for support.
“Are you intending to destroy my club? Don’t you dare thinking that I’m not going to take the costs from your wage.”
In spite of the playful tone, the owner of T.A.B.O.O had a serious expression, as much as his composure. He was standing beside the door of the dressing room, his arms crossed.
Sho wondered how long he had been there. By the way he was staring at him, he had certainly watched his small argument with Masaki. He considered saying something about it, but ended up sighing, impatiently. He wasn’t willing to deal with the superprotection his boss felt towards the time-traveler. He had enough of the man’s disdain whenever he looked at him in the last two weeks.
“You know… the main reason why I invited you to work in my club wasn’t your sensuality. I had no doubts about it. You always knew what to do on a stage and I was certain that you would bring me lots of money. I’m a business man, after all” the older man said, surprising him with his statement. Nonetheless, he was certain that he would be scolded by his boss, who was certainly about to defend his protégé.
“J-san, I…” he started, slightly impatient. All that he wanted was to get away, to a place where he could be alone with his thoughts.
“It was exactly that expression in your face right now… Your arrogant and defying attitude, as if you couldn’t care less about the world: that’s what made me hire you” the man said, not giving him a chance to run away. “In a way, I could see myself in you. I also believed my freedom was more important than anything else. I never allowed anyone to get too closer, collecting partners of one-night-stands."
“Until you met Masaki” Sho said, unable to repress his words. Usually, he would never had the courage to be that bold, but he was so furious that he ended up losing control.
“Yes… until I met him” his boss said, surprising him once again. He never believed he would confirm his suspicions so straightforwardly. “Without me noticing, Masaki managed to shaken my whole rationatily. His romantic ideas, the way he valued the people he loved… it all made me feel like a jerk.”
Sho gulped, perfectly aware of what J meant. All his lifestyle had changed drastically since Masaki showed up. He, who had an active sexual life with a series of different partners, suddenly started to go to bed with a single partner for three whole months - not counting the night he had spent with Sato two weeks ago. And he wasn’t displeased by that fact, much on the contrary. He had never felt more alive than when he was sharing his bed with Masaki. For several times he had almost lost control of his body with the feeling of having the time-traveler’s body moving against his.
He had to admit it wasn’t only sex, though. It was his companionship, his smile, even his smell.
“J-san, I’m so sorry” he said, trying to seem indifferent to the older man’s confession, “but I don’t get what you are trying to tell me…”
“I’m telling you not to make the same mistake I've made” Sho noticed how hard he was trying to hold his pride at that moment. “Tell Masaki how you feel, Sho.”
“I… What? I'm not...”
Matsumoto smiled.
“What? Are you really going to say you are not in love with him?”
“And why don’t you follow your own advice, J-san?” he asked, instead of answearing to the question, not even noticing he had not denied it.
“Because what I feel about Masaki has nothing to do with romance, not anymore. I love him, that’s true, but as my best friend. You have no reason to be jealous” he sighed, impatiently. “Listen carefully, Sho, because I’m only going to tell you this once, more so for I believe you don’t deserve it. Unfortunately, Masaki loves you and I want him to be happy.” Sho was once again astonished by Matsumoto’s sincerity that night. “Stop fighting it. You have nothing to lose by being honest about your feelings.”
Sho followed Matsumoto’s figure disappearing down the corridor in disbelief. Among all people, he never expected it would come from him the push he needed to take an attitude.
He had to stop pretending that he was happy to have a different partner every night, when all he could think of was Masaki. He needed… he wanted to have him in his life, even if, in order to accomplish it, he had to enter a relationship, even if it meant giving up his freedom. For the first time, considering the meaning of that word, he realized how wrong he was. He had only been truly free beside Masaki, when he could be himself.
With resolution, he opened the door of the dressing room, willing to confess his love, to ask him to forgive his stupidity and to beg for a second chance.
He did none of that, nonetheless.
The dressing room was empty.
He tried to find an explanation to that fact, but he couldn’t come up with any reasonable one. It was impossible for Masaki to pass through that door without being noticed by him or J. Neither would he jump from the second floor window.
His body stiffened in pain when he realized what had truly ocurred there.
He ran to the mirror in despair, in the hopes that the portal was still crossable, but all he found was its solid surface.
He fell down on his knees, feeling his heart breaking in a thousand pieces.
He had lost Masaki.
*******************************
DISCO STAR, 1979
Masaki opened the first buttons of his printed shirt and straightened it inside his pants before checking the result in the mirror.
Five months have passed since he had crossed his way back and, since then, the object had showed no alteration. If it wasn’t for finding Jun desperate over his disappearance, questioning where he had been for almost four months, he would have believed his time travel to have been nothing but a dream; or a nightmare, if he took his heartbreak in consideration.
He even considered changing his dressing room, but to avoid the place he had shared with Sho in the future wouldn’t lessen the way he missed him. Once in a while he caught himself staring at the object with more accuracy, expecting to see even a glimpse of the other man’s image, but that never happened.
It was better that way. It would be easier to go on with his life without having any hopes of seeing him again.
And… there was also Jun.
It had been weird to see him again, now that he was aware of his feelings. The last thing he wanted was to make him suffer because of him. He couldn’t help but wonder if things could work between them. After all, he cared for him deeply and he probably could come to love him in due time. He had heard about couples who started as friends and ended up falling in love. It could be their case, since their relationship was filled with complicity, respect and tenderness.
He couldn’t be selfish, though.
Not when his mind was still on Sho.
He walked to the ballroom, ready for his routine, feeling a good vibration. He loved the delicious feeling he had before each performance, anxious for the audience’s reaction.
He smiled when he got to the dance floor. Jun was finishing his act, making the audience dance with him choreographed steps. He felt a bit envy for knowing how gorgeous he would still be on his seventies.
He had never told him about his adventure in the XXI century. He didn’t want to interfere with the future and he knew that, even being his best friend, Jun would never believe that he had traveled in time.
He didn’t want to sound insane, neither to make him worry more than he already was. He felt bad for having stayed away for so long, making his friend believe it was his fault for making him face Hideo. Therefore, he decided to tell him he had gone to a distant Aunt in the countryside.
Jun gave him a cold shoulder for a while, hurt for not having received a call, a letter nor even a note. Even then, he remained staring at him from afar, caring that he wouln't skip any meals and helping him to catch up with his job at Disco Star.
“Ready to admit that I’m the number one in the house?” Jun asked when he joined him, the crowd of women screaming his name hysterically.
“Only in your dreams…” he joked, remembering that he would only admit the fact forty years in the future.
Moving away, he went to the center of the dance floor, where he stopped in a flashy pose.
“Everybody hands up!
Ima coming up
Shoushin shoumei no
I'm a disco star”
His body practically moved by himself to the sound of the music, even though his steps were choreographed. He smiled when he felt the warmth of the disco's goers over him, admiring his dance and his body.
His smile was grateful, but also a bit cocky as well. He couldn’t deny he enjoyed being appreaciated. He suddenly remembered Sho and the invitation to dance that he had had no chance to accept. He had told him he would like to see him in a dance floor and he would have loved showing off to him, to have fun with him doing what he enjoyed the most.
His chest was filled with nostalgia and he closed his eyes for a few seconds to bring back to his mind the memory of that beautiful face. He desperately wanted to see him again, even if only one more time.
He shook his head in order to cast away that thought and focus in the end of his performance, but Sho’s image didn’t go away. Much on the contrary, it got even stronger in front of his eyes.
Maybe he was dreaming, maybe getting crazy, but those pair of brown eyes full of emotions seemed very real to him.
As well as those eyebrows, those sloppy shoulders, the heart-shaped mouth and its characteristic half-smile.
He had to get closer, their bodies barely a few inches from touching for him to realize he wasn’t hallucinating.
“Sho-chan...”
“I finally found you, Masaki” the man of the future smiled before enveloping him in a tight hug.
