I'm sure not everyone crates their dogs, but we always have, and all the trainners I've known have. One of my friend has a seeing eye dog, and his command phrase is "dog in the box". It's hilarious, the dog hops right in all excitedly whenever you say that.
Caleb is a box dog too! As are most of the dogs I train with. Although, his command is "crate", far less amusing. ^_~ He has scaled 4' x-pens as well as about 6' of chain link, so any sort of containment needs to have a lid!
That said, congrats on the new arrival! She's simply lovely. The first year is going to be such an adventure, I'm sure you and your family will do a great job!

My advice to you is forget the playpen and crate train your dog.
It's good for your sanity, and the dog has a place to go to where it feels safe.

does she chase her own tail? lol rosie used to do it when she was younger...it's so cute LOL
