Allison & Lillia was one of my major picks for the season. I was convinced it was going to be awesome. And so far, it hasn't disappointed me. I think what I like the most is the dynamic between the two main characters. They remind me of one of my favorite anime pairs of all time, the lovely Haruhi and Kyon from The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi. And that isn't my only reason. I love the setting. It's set during the truce of a war between two countries. I love the feel of this series, I think that's helped by a really awesome soundtrack, as well.
Soul Eater is awesome! I love action series, I love retarded shounen action. Unfortunately, most of the retarded shounen action on air right now is crap like Naruto and Bleach. Unlike those two QUALITY series, Soul Eater has awesome animation, courtesy of Studio Bones.
I like the characters already! Soul is great, Blair is actually funny and not just pointless fanservice, and Maka kicks ass. I have issues with Maka's voice, though. The voice fits the character, but there is no emotion behind it. I think with voice-acting, you have to exaggerate emotion slightly to get the idea across to the viewers. Maka's seiyuu is apparently a newbie, and I don't think she's quite used to voice-acting yet. I hope she'll get better... this series looks like it's the kind to get licensed in the US really quickly, and I have a feeling the dub will do a better job at it. T_Tb
Vampire Knight is great as well. I liked the characters (ZERO IS HOT), who are pretty bishounens and nice to look at (ZERO IS HOT). That is my only real reason, actually. PRETTY BOYS yay. I went and checked out the manga, and also checked up with a couple of people who had watched the manga previously. I disagreed with them. I think the manga adapted the anime very well: It's slightly out of order, but not in a way that significantly affects the plot. The only complaint I have, actually, is that the guys are all prettier in the manga.
It seems like I'll be watching all three shoujo series this season. Special A reminds me of another of my favorite series, Ouran High School Host Club. Except, where Ouran parodied the shoujo tropes... Special A plays them straight. It's ridiculous. I don't know what direction this series could take, but I'll follow it anyway, because it does a good job of entertaining me.
On a side note: It seems like shoujo series put emphasis on the gap between the haves and the have-nots, be it gaps in intelligence, looks, social standings, whatever. Itazura na Kiss has its A-F rankings, Vampire Knight's Night Class is markedly prettier than its Day Class (albeit the vampire thing), Ouran had the whole 'Rich bastards' joke... etc.
