Title: Caught in the Moment
Author: Me, dangerous_lie
Part: 1/1
Pairing: Poynter/Jones
Rating: PG-13
Summary: Danny’s married; Dougie loves him, a recipe for disaster perhaps?
Disclaimer: Not true, duh. An entire work of fiction.
A/N: This has been sat in my folder for ages so I thought it was about time it saw light. It didn’t exactly turn out as I anticipated I was pushing for a better ending, but sadly my muse got up and left so I gave up. It’s technically an AU seen as though McFly aren’t actually McFly. ‘Naïve, just a kid, too young to understand what love is!’ those were the words that had been uttered to him; those were his reasons for breaking his heart, leaving him an obliterated mess. He now sat, like he did every night, in a smoky bar drowning his sorrows, saddened and used.

Dougie was his name; he was just nineteen, a naive kid. Maybe he was too young to fall in love, but he knew what he felt and he knew it was love. The man at the bar who had stolen his heart was Danny Jones a little older than him and far more experienced, but what had happened between them was wrong on so many levels. Danny Jones was married and to the most stunning woman Dougie had ever the grace to see, and as if that wasn’t bad enough he was his boss too, and had made it perfectly clear what had happened had meant nothing, was to be nothing more than an elicit affair.

He watched him; glass raised to his lips the clear liquid within burning his oesophagus as he swallowed. He could see him at the bar stood alongside her, Sophie, his wife. There was a fair bit of distance between them, a certain chill in the air, his overly large hand drumming against the mahogany surface. He could see her chatting her lips moving and Danny nodding his curly topped head, yet he seemed distant, vaguely aware of his surroundings. Nevertheless, the boy with the dirty blonde hair and the tanned complexion felt disgusted with that man and himself. He hated what they had done, he hated Danny, and yet at the same time he loved him. He was thoroughly fucked up!

He had gotten swept up in the power Danny had held. He was charming; he made him feel special like he was the only one, nobody had done that before, dominated him to the point of exhilaration. It had been just sex to begin with, quickies after work when everyone had gone home; Danny was a married man after all. Dougie knew it was an experiment, a bit of fun which neither had intended on getting this far.

An affair with your boss is such a cliché and Dougie had tried to stop it happening on many occasions, but it had all spiralled so quickly. It had gone from meaningless sex one minute to feelings the next. Before either had known what had happened, or how it had happened it had turned into a full-blown affair, sneaking around and meeting in seedy hotels and dingy clubs.

He remembered the first time he’d told Danny he loved him, post coital and wrapped up in the cottony covers of some cheap hotel. He remembered vividly Danny hadn’t said it back he hadn’t really expected him too, no big deal. Danny had just smiled and kissed his forehead before slipping out of the bed pulling on his boxers and disappearing towards the bathroom to wash away any trace of their dalliance before he returned home to her.

Dougie soon grew jealous of Sophie over time. She was utterly stunning, long blonde hair; tumbling in loose curls down her back like a golden waterfall, wide brown eyes and tanned, blemish free skin, every inch of her was incredibly perfect. However it wasn’t her looks he was jealous of, definitely not, more the fact she had Danny day and night, that she had that ring on her finger a band of gold joining them together for better or worse.

Dougie knew their marriage was a lie from all the things Danny told him. He didn’t love her; he just stayed with her for her sake and her sake alone. Been gay hadn’t been an option, he’d been pressured into marrying a woman he didn’t love and would never love!

Dougie felt saddened for Danny. None of this had been the life he’d chosen, he’d caved in under peer pressure. To Dougie it felt like he was Danny’s escape from the world he’d become immersed in. He’d always figured one day this would become more than sex, and comfort. He had hoped it would become more real; he was wrong, so very wrong.

Six months was how long it had been going on for before he realised. It was afterwards once more, in a dowdy hotel room, still wrapped in the sheets and still smelling of sex that Danny had said Sophie was starting to become suspicious, had questioned him, asked if he was having an affair.

Foolishly Dougie had thought Danny had told her the truth, admitted what he was doing behind her back, how he really felt for her. He hadn’t. Instead he’d told Dougie this had to stop, that it wasn’t right, and that he had to give his marriage another shot.

Heartbroken wasn’t the word. He felt stupid. He knew he shouldn’t have fallen in love with him from the get go.

He felt used, betrayed, angered. He didn’t cry he wouldn’t, not in front of Danny anyway. He ignored him, ignored the way his eyes burnt into the side of his head, stood up, collected his clothes, and locked himself in the bathroom allowing his defences to finally fall.

He sat on the toilet (lid down of course); he leant forwards, hiding his face in his hands, brushing away his falling tears with his pinkie. Danny wasn’t worth any of his tears anyway!

He could hear Danny moving around outside, he heard the quiet knock on the door, and his name been called, yet he chose to ignore it, ignore him. Snapped from his reverie he began with sluggish ease getting dressed, feeling sick and empty, his skin crawling, Danny’s touch still lingering.

He had known this day would come eventually, he knew deep down their little affair would come to an end and he’d have to let him go. He’d never been his, not really. It just hurt, perhaps a little more than it should have.

He remembered thinking as he fastened his jeans that he could get over him. It seemed like the simplest thing in the world, all he had to do was block out the last six months; pretend none of it had happened. However, it wasn’t that simple. Fully clothed and blotchy eyed he’d opened the bathroom door, brought face to face with the freckled man he knew he could never get over. Danny’s eyes had always been such a prominent blue, captivating and capturing his soul, drawing him in and burning him to the core, lips pink and parted uttering the words that tore what was left of his soul apart.

“Dougie, please just let me explain? I do have feelings for you, but I can’t love you. I can’t be with you. I can’t continue lying and cheating and stringing you along. I’ll just end up hurting you like I do everyone else. You’re just a kid Doug’s; you’re too young to understand what love is!”

He remembered yelling, he remembered the bubble of anger below his skin. He remembered everything so prominently.

“Don’t fucking patronise me, Danny?” he’d snapped at the words ‘just a kid’, mind spinning as he tried to swallow the bitterness he felt, as he scurried around the room, collecting his belongings.

“I’m sorry.” he’d flinched feeling the hand on his back. The touch, even now, was still burnt into his skin, lingering and sucking the life from his soul.

“Don’t!” Dougie shook his head scrunched up his features and spun away from the brunette; he didn’t want to hear Danny’s pitiful explanation anymore, he couldn’t. The words, those bittersweet and highly significant words he’d just uttered were so simply effective and had broken him with just their power alone, made him feel so naïve and vulnerable. He felt the tears, the swell of warmth build behind his eyes as he shook his head and pushed by him.

That was the last time he’d seen him properly. When he saw him at work, even though that was a rare occurrence, he could never quite meet his gaze. He put on a pretence; the façade of steel he wore was all-fake. He kept himself away. The last month without him, without their little out of work meet ups, without his sweet kisses and tingling caresses had been like torture to his body and soul and he knew if he was allowed to be near him he’d fall into his trap again.

He knew he was been watched by him, he relished that fact actually. He stole glances, just to see what they were doing, but never allow his gaze to rest level with his, he couldn’t bear to see the look in those beautiful eyes.

He felt the burning stab of jealousy tear at his heart as he looked up at the wrong moment catching her placing her lips on his, hands fisting his jacket and pulling him closer to her. She seemed to be doing all the work, Danny didn’t seem all that responsive, it wasn’t a consolation, no, but the final straw to the blonde’s fragile being. He drained his glass of the liquid that was left and stood up, wobbling, and making for the exit.

The night wasn’t freezing cold, but there was a defined chill in the summery air, his cheeks instantly flooding with colour as he stepped from the building. His hands dove into the pockets of his low-slung jeans, the breeze ruffling his hair, tongue licking as his dry lips moistening them slightly as he stepped across the road and trudged towards a decrepit bench.

He didn’t really pay any attention, just sat down, eyes glued to his converse clad feet. He always wore them to work. A brittle sigh left his lips as another set of feet came into view. His head lifted and his aquamarine eyes glazed as they rested on his solitary figure.

Part of him wanted to run, but he couldn’t run from this forever, he’d been running for the past month now, maybe it was time to face facts. Yet despite that thought he didn’t offer any words or a greeting of any sorts he just watched as Danny’s hands slowly retracted from his pockets, and he sat beside him. The air of tension was palpable every intake of breath could be heard clear and precise, every thump of their hearts, every blink of their eyelashes.

Danny watched him in silence, feeling every ounce of sorrow. His life had been pretty much as Dougie had been, unbearable. The last month without him had been sheer hell. He hated to admit it but he had fallen for the young man he had broken so carelessly.

“So, urm, how’ve you been?” the words spilled from the brunette’s lips. His head lifted eyebrows quirking as he watched the look on Dougie’s face change from shock to pure horror.

“Why do you care Danny? How do you think I’ve been?”

The brunette, slightly taken aback, winced and fingered the edge of his neatly ironed shirt. “I’m sorry that probably wasn’t the smartest thing to say. I’ve missed you!”

“Don’t lie you’ve gotten on just fine without me,” Dougie looked up at him and sighed, his eyes meeting the brunette’s, allowing himself to back down and his defences to fall.

“But I haven’t Doug’s. I miss what we had!”

The blonde shook his head and raised himself off the bench. “We had nothing Danny. It was just sex, nothing more than a few dirty little fumbles. You made that perfectly clear when you went back to your wife.” his words were tarnished with the bitter edge of jealous.

As he moved to walk away he felt a hand wrap around his wrist, tugging him to face him. Danny’s eyes sparkled under the harsh light of the streetlamps. He felt the hate, the anger dissolve as Danny’s fingers smoothed across his soft cheek, lips turned into a smile.

“She isn’t going to be my wife for much longer!”

Dougie’s eyes widened as he gawped at the brunette, processing the words he’d just spoken a stuttered, ‘what’ falling from his lips.

“I’m going to file for divorce. It wasn’t a real marriage anyway.” there was almost a twang of bitter resentment in the brunette’s voice, eyes rolling as a breathy chuckle fell from his lips.

“What about your parents?” as Dougie spoke he saw the vulnerable side to Danny that he’d never seen before. He was broken, but at the same time he was holding it so together.

“They can disown me for all I care. I’m old enough to know who I am and what I want. And at the moment there’s only one person.” his eyes rested so calmly on the blonde’s flawless features Dougie’s head shaking fervently.

“Don’t Danny! Please don’t do this; you can’t make a black promise and then go back on your word in a few weeks time and break my heart again.”

“Just listen to me Doug’s please,” he paused and swallowed thickly. “I know I hurt you, but I’m not going to do that again. I should have done this long ago. This last month without any contact from you has given me time to think and there is no doubt in my mind. They do say absence makes the heart grow fonder…”

“That’s if you actually will miss and do love the person, not just the sex,” Dougie spat, still somewhat disbelieving.

“I did miss you!”

“But you don’t love me!” Dougie smiled weakly trying to mask the constant ache that was tearing at his heart. He couldn’t hide the continuous want for Danny to love him. It wasn’t about to happen, though, was it?

“Just listen Dougie, okay?” Danny pleaded, his fingers stilling on his lips as their eyes locked, the smaller blonde’s heartbeat thudding against his rib cage in anticipation and expectation.

“You’re right, to begin with I didn’t see this as anything more than sex, but you changed all that Doug’s. When I was with you I could be the real me, I didn’t have to lie or pretend.” a sighed fell from Danny’s lips as he shook his head and let his fingers drop from the blonde’s flawless features.

“But you did lie Danny. You lied to me!” Dougie’s eyes filled with tears, the anger back and once more sizzling through his veins, but he wouldn’t cry.

“And I’m sorry I was stupid for saying what I did. I dunno why I didn’t realise or tell you this sooner, but I do love you, I do care for you and I don’t think you’re just a naïve kid. You’re a smart and beautiful young man.”

“Why are you telling me all this,” Dougie sighed.

“‘Cos you need to know!” with locking eyes and beating hearts everything stopped, the world around them faded out and before rational thinking could take hold Dougie was closing the gap, lips softly brushing the brunette’s.

All his doubts hadn’t been quelled, there was still questions buzzing annoyingly in the back of his mind, but Dougie didn’t need them answering at the moment. The gentle touches and the sweet kisses were enough for now.

It had started as a lie, a dirty little secret, but like so many other meaningless flings it had grown meaning, it had become something much, much more.

Dougie hadn’t set out to fall for Danny, to wreck a marriage that was never a marriage. What had happened between them had snowballed, had been unintentional, their instincts had taken over.

Danny had told Dougie he wouldn’t break his heart. Made a promise, a black promise perhaps, and as dexterous freckled fingers slowly laced with the blonde’s, Dougie doubted the staying power in that promise. Had he set himself up for a fall?

The words, the three little words that he kidded himself meant something were wrapped around his heart. It was those words that had given them meaning and diversity and had glorified this into something much more than a seedy affair. Love pure and simple love!

As they walked away hand in hand, Dougie knew that by morning, in the sunrays this could all look very different indeed. Even if only for one more night he got to pretend Danny was his and his alone he knew, if that was the case, it would be time he’d cherish, before binding the pieces of his splintered heart back together and beginning the process of getting over Danny Jones once more.

FIN.
