Yuppers. That's the incest drama. Remove the incest and it sounds made me for me, add it and not touching(sadly)
What makes KimuTakuy mesmerizing is that he attractiveness isn't in his looks(though he is good looking) but in his presence, even in stills. He is very much "larger than life"
...don't the two of them not know they are siblings, until the end when it's too late (and I think she never finds out, anyway). To me, that makes a diffrence, fiction wise.
Re: Also...meganbmooreOctober 14 2007, 05:46:10 UTC
I believe so. It make HUGE difference in how you perceive the characters and the story, but the end result is the same. It also seems that the longer they don't know, the worse it plays out for the characters...kinda "punishment for ignorance"
Re: Also...dangermousieOctober 14 2007, 05:48:20 UTC
I am a sucker for a good tragedy *says the girl who still has to nerve herself to finish Beautiful Life and has been putting off watching Karei-naru Ichizoku (this is sacry that I know how to spell the latter off the top of my head) because it's a tragedy, even though she loves KimuTaku and they are excellent*
so hopefully I can cope. I admit that I will watch KimuTaku almost in anything though. Not if there are a lot of little kids (thus Engine is out) or if there is law (Hero is out) but other than that...
Re: Also...meganbmooreOctober 14 2007, 05:52:00 UTC
Myeh. If I want a good tragedy involving separated siblings, I have plenty of things where there's no actual incest. Like Damo(about the only form of "incest" I can take when it' main and "good guy" characters)
Don't know aboutr Engine, but Hero is very good and what made me check out other KimuTaku dramas.
Re: Also...dangermousieOctober 14 2007, 05:55:12 UTC
Oh, I don't care about the sibling part. I do care about forbidden angsty love, for whatever reason.
Basically, since I don't have a squick factor, this is so on my short list.
Btw, I think you were the one who watched Love Generation? Does it have a happy ending? After the planned double bill of ABL and K-nI, I'll need something where KimuTaku gets a happy ending.
Re: Also...meganbmooreOctober 14 2007, 06:02:23 UTC
LG has a happy ending. Even for those who don't deserve it. But especially for those who do.
The thing about the incest in dramas like that isn't the squick factor so much as it's another excuse at angst. The plot, from descriptions, has more than enough ammunition for forbidden angsty love, and from writeups I've read, the incest seems to be there simply to up the angst. I have little tolerance for plot devices that are there just to add angst, especially if there are plenty already. Honestly, I have yet to read or watch something where a main romantic plot involved incest where it wasn't just an excuse to add to the angst...in almost every case where I've encountered it, removing the incest wouldn't have affected the plot, just removed authorial excuses
Re: Also...meganbmooreOctober 14 2007, 06:10:12 UTC
You might be annoyed with the heroine the first few eps, but it's really good(and I started loving her to pieces about halfway through) Tokyo Juliet I will not watch because I am told that it will bore me and that it will make me annoyed with Ariel Lin. I am willing to risk the first but not the econd. Wu Xun is a dear, but not enough incentive.
I have an endless capacity for genuine, called for angst, but minimal tolerance for angst for the sake of angst(hence my extreme pickiness when it comes to modern kdramas)
I will hold your hand, but I will also say "I told you so." You would be disappointed in me if I didn't. (Actually, only the first phrase is probably true)

Heh. I, OTOH, glory in modern kdramas :P
You are not missing anything in not watching TJ. It's not a good drama and Ariel Lin is rather annoying in it (or rather her character is). A lot of kissing though.
I don't mind 'I told you so' as long as hand-holding is also there :)
Re: Also...meganbmooreOctober 14 2007, 06:18:49 UTC
I enjoy your glorying in kdramas but will not touch many(in egneral, not necessarily the ones you post on.) Except a few intrigue ones and straight up comedies. Korea fails when it tries crack, but it can do genuine comedy marveously(especially My Girl and Fantasy Couple). Even though I'm not big on Goong as a whole, there are a number of brilliant funny moments...Chae-Gyung's period drama wedding night fantasy holds a very special place in my heart.
Re: Also...dangermousieOctober 14 2007, 06:27:52 UTC
I posted about it ad nauseum when I first watched it (it's my favorite serious kdrama, just as My Girl is my fave light one) but write-ups are pretty detailed and spoilery, so here's a short summary: It's about a man, Bokgu, who decides to get close and ruin a young actress, Eun Seuk, to avenge the fact that his brother was supposedly toyed with by her and ended up in a coma because of her (which isn't true but he doesn't know it). He becomes her bodyguard. But of course he falls in love with her himself.
Re: Also...meganbmooreOctober 14 2007, 06:33:56 UTC
Hrm...a modern revenge kdrama actually kinda scares me...
I feel there is death in snow in this one. (That said, I have loved every OTP-main or secondary-where one half was a model/actor/actress that i've seen)

I agree re KimuTaku. He is good looking but not stunning. It's his manner and intensity.

Re: incest. I basically don't mind any excuse for angst, as long as it's not utterly utterly ridiculous.
I think they wanted to make Million Stars a complete tragedy (I mean, if the MV is to be believed, they are both dead at the end). Oh well...
I am totally looking forward to this, even if I'll need a lot of lj-handholding.
