Any recs? I am a PC person, not a Mac girl.

I'd say Compaq, but I don't think they're in service anymore. I think they merged with someone. I've just had one for going on five years now and it's been really good to me.

Other than that, sorry. I'm terrible with computers. I need a new one too and was probably gonna make a LJ post just like this one of these days.

Based on some of my and friends current experiences with Vista, I'd wait until they sort out some of those issues if you can.

Sorry, that's not very helpful, is it? :(

HP is reputable. But service-wise, I think Dell, they say is still the best.

How heavy a user are you?

The one we have right now is Dell and it's been very very good.

Pretty heavy. All that dling takes its toll :)

Then you're looking for hard disk space and a high memory. I'm not sure what's considered big space and high memory right now, but you can ask your vendor.

If you're watching your downloads on the PC, too, it's also nice to ask around for good graphics and sound cards and display screens.

I kinda know it in basics but I usually leave the details up to people who know better (i.e. my brother.) If I hear any recommendations, will let you know. :)

The one we have right now is Dell and it's been very very good. Good to hear that. I've heard good things about Mac service and nearly zilch on PC's, especially good news.

i would recommend toshiba laptop... it has great speakers *harmon cardon speakers* and since you dl dramas like myself then you'd appreciate the clear picture from it... my lil brother just got one last sunday and his a pretty heavy gamer so he had amd or intel duo and a good graphic card, windows vista ultimate * i recommend this one rather than vista home, less bugs* and 280 gb...

and he loves it, it was pretty cheap since we bought it at frys for less than $1200..... i prefer my apple powerbook but his a pc person as well... and i love his laptop, i've tinkered with it and its not that heavy

your welcome its just if you want the extras and a little cheaper sometimes than dell and hp * they sometimes give you a crappy video/ graphics card and if you want a better one you have to pay more*... but yeah so envious of how clear his picture quality is...

and i've done a study of this since i helped pick his laptop and my own * i compare price, the video card, extras, hardrive, etc..., and even checked the reviews" also if you really really want a great laptop i would also recommend alienware however it is pricey..

I bought a new laptop (an Acer Aspire 5600 notebook) 9 months ago and learned a lot from the experience.

Get one with a multi-core processor. Mine has a dual core processor and it is so much faster than my old laptop. According to this wiki a multi-core will be a tiny bit slower for gaming, but for other programs they are faster than a single core.

I have an LCD screen and while the picture quality is great, it is a pain to try and keep clean. Even a finger print will leave an annoying smudge that is impossible to clean off. LCD screens are increasingly the norm but they do have their drawbacks.

Stay away from those light silver frames. They scratch way too easily. If I could time travel, I'd go back and buy my laptop in black and a metal that's a bit more hardy.
