OMG, Lovers. Stop being so darn good.
I am on episode 7 and this is that rare drama, one where I really love the ‘other’ characters, even as I root like mad for the OTP. In fact, Yu Jin (Kang Jae’s girlfriend) is pretty cool in her own right: she is warm, strong-willed and pretty. (The mob boss’ son is alswo awesome but he isn’t on evidence much in ep 7).
In fact, as of now, I cannot possibly see how the OTP will ever find its way to each other as even though Kang Jae is attracted to Mi Joo, it is totally subconscious and he does love Yu Jin and he has just found out and is happy she is pregnant with his child. (I was so curious how he was going to react to the news, and I loved his reaction. I wonder if it’s a result of mix of wanting a family of his own and also not wanting to abandon his child or Yu Jin the way he was abandoned).
He is not the type of guy to walk out on a pregnant lover (especially when she is so decent. I love that she isn’t really jealous of Mi Joo). Mi Joo is not the type of woman to let him (I love that she is further along in realizing her feelings though). I really see no way out for the OTP to actually hook up short of Yu Jin dying in childbirth but that would open a whole other can of worms.
And the cool thing? I like the characters and their interactions so much that I would not mind if Kang Jae stayed with Yu Jin who is almost good enough for him, or Mi Joo hooked up with Mob Boss’ Son who is almost good enough for her.
But if the OTP got together, I’d die of glee.
Another thing I like about this is that so far it has not wallowed in ‘poor little Kang Jae had a fubar upbringing’ stuff. He doesn’t seem like the guy to wallow and it’s the little comment or so you get which makes me invested actually, like his mentioning matter-of-factly while talking to someone he’s never been on a swing before and the other guy is all ‘wtf, you are in your thirties, what, you weren’t a kid?’ and KJ mentioning that at the orphanage there was only one swing and so only the President’s kid could play in it and then the conversation moving on.
Another thing I like is that it doesn’t really sugarcoat that mob is an unsavory business and it’s clear Kang Jae had no issue with violence or roughing things up to get $$$ or ‘running’ drugs/women/etc. In fact, if Mi Joo and Kang Jae ever do hook up, she has to write a big thank you to Yu Jin for making him human. The little flashback where he explains how he met Yu Jin is pretty telling as it’s seven or so years ago and he is busting up her place because her (dead) dad owed money and he tells her if she has no $$$ she will have to sell herself to pay back and she says she won’t, she’ll pay back through working blah blah. But he is totally rough there. Of course, he is also older here.
I love all the little otp scenes so much. Like the scene where he drags her out of the dance club and is totally fuming she let the other guy touch her and he doesn’t even realize why he is po-ed and is all ‘do you only yell at gangsters, what you couldn’t tell him hands off’ etc etc. Heh. It makes me think of the scene later in the ep where she sees him with gf (he is going to take her to the doctor) and he is all impersonal and she gets pissed and realizes it is ridiculous and so comes up with a flimsy excuse for it. Heh.
Just like the scene with the gloves. They are on a ferry, going to her Dad’s house and her hands are cold and she says it and then sees he has thick gloves on and she is all ‘I didn’t mean for you to give me yours’ and he is all ‘good, I am not in the habit of lending’ and she makes an adorably po-ed face and then sees he is already stripping off his gloves and he gives them to her and she is protesting and he says, matter of factly, ‘If you were my woman, I’d warm your hands with my own and not the gloves, but as it is…’ Heh. And then later insults her hands being like a man’s :P (Contrasted with her seeing him later with YJ and she is wearing his gloves this time).
And when he brings out the absconder guy (saving the land her dad and siblings live on), OMG, he is like a little kid (dimple!!!!) with the grin and sneaking looks to see her reaction and it’s adorable.
And then she guilt-trips him (heh) into taking her to dinner and they are having so much fun and he tells her she is the only woman to be unharmed after grabbing his collar (referencing first meeting) and later she ends up telling him Yu Jin is pregnant because she knows Yu Jin is troubled and he deserves to know.
That is why I like her so much. She is very straightforward.
Other thing I love: his scene with Yu Jin on hearing the news. He comes to find her in her store, being insulted by Mrs. Mob Boss and even though he never fights back on his own behalf, he does for YJ. I love that scene SO much.
And then he and YJ are outside and the scene is awesome and she wants him to take her to hospital tomorrow (for an abortion but she doesn’t say that) and he is all ’abortion?’ and is all ‘why wait for tomorrow?’ and there is all that suppressed passion and pain and he asks if he can see a sono pic and is ‘poor kid, what chance does he have, with his father a fool?’ and she is crying and asks ‘oppa, can I keep it?’ and he says very gently ‘it’s worse and worse, now the mother is a fool too’ and there is hugging and AWWWWW.
And he is fussing over her then and next day and it’s adorable.
