In news about a manga that couldn’t be more different from SDK (but is equally awesome) if it tried, I’ve been reading more Fruits Basket. Just finished vol 19. Kyo/Tohru own me SO much. The scene with the hug-not-hug is GUUUUUUH. The only thing that came close to guuuh levels (but still didn’t hit it, sorry) was the Ayame/Mine scene. To see someone so cheerful and confident uncertain and earnest was AWESOME and made me melt.
You know, I was thinking that Ayame totally reminds me of some other character and I finally figured it out: he is rather like a grown-up Tamaki, isn’t he? Gorgeous, and overdramatic, and supremely cheerful and confident (even oblivious) but quite perceptive at rare times. Of course, he doesn’t have Tamaki’s innate instinctive caring and has had to work for it. In fact, a lot of his stuff is his trying to remedy the thoughtless (though never malicious) things he did when he was younger. And he is rather unstoppable, like Tamaki. By anyone but Hatori that is. OMG, Hatori is so his Kyoya, the best friend that is intelligent and reserved and exasperatedly amused at the endearing drama queen in their midst. Hmmm, I guess that would make Shigure the Hitachin twins rolled into one. I could see that. Mine is much too off-beat to be Haruhi though ;) I do wonder if she knows about his secret. When Yuki asked, Ayame completely ignored the question and switched the topic to something super-unrelated. Heh. Though seeing how Mine is, she’d probably think it was something to add some kink to their activities :D (OMG, if those two have children, their rebellion phase would probably be to be the most stodgy and reserved people ever. They’ll grow up to be accountants).
Btw, am I the only one or are the ‘Yuki in student counsel’ storylines as boring as dirt? I thought at first it was because while I like Yuki, he is not one of my top faves (Top dozen is ranked thusly: Kyo, Hatori, Haru, Rin, Tohru, Kureno, Ayame, Yuki, Momiji, Uo, Mayu, Hana), but then I tried picturing Kyo or Haru in those scenes and nope, they were still boring. I think the problem is that those scenes are so normal. There is no Sohmaness in them (if that makes sense). You could stick any characters from a manga with no fantasy elements into it. Nothing wrong with that, but those scenes are neither dramatic (not much dramatic potential) nor funny. They might be even realistic, for all I know, but they are boring. Give me the student president (and his assistant) from Full Metal Panic: Fumoffu anyday instead. It doesn’t help that all the student counsel characters are so boring. I like Yuki but not enough to enjoy seeing him interact with a bunch of bores. We are supposed to like Kakeru, Yuki’s new close friend and find him funny but I just find him obnoxious (and he earlier said cruel things to Tohru which equals death in my book). And Machi? The girl Yuki is into? I am glad he likes someone for Yuki’s sake, but in a manga with so many awesome female characters of all varieties (Tohru, Rin, Uo, Hana, Kisa, Mayu, Mine etc etc) it seems a pity that Yuki got stuck with a depressive bore. I am grumpy because when I get to those storylines in printed manga, I can skim through them but hard to do with scanlations. Oh well, when there are so many awesome storylines involving everyone else, I shouldn’t feel too bad.
I am so posting Kyo/Tohru and Ayame/Mine pics when I have more time. FB is like shipper heaven. Seriously. I’ve never had so many ships for a manga or anime before: Kyo/Tohru, Haru/Rin, Hatori/Mayu, Kureno/Uo, Ayame/Mine. Even Hiro and Kisa (though they are way too young) and Ritsu and Shigure’s editor. Heeeh. Adorableness.
P.S. Haru and Rin are wearing matching collars. HEEE. SIGH.
Ypu know how I mentioned I love dramas about mobsters and the women they luuuuuurve?
Well, soon there will be another drama added to the list.
I’ve just found out there is an upcoming kdrama: Cain and Abel.
Below is the summary which sounds like crack. Pure crack:
The series…is the fateful story of two brothers who were separated during their youth and meet again as a police agent and killer. So Ji Sub will play the younger brother 'Jin' who was sent to the U.S. for adoption and is raised to become a killer of the Mafia. Both brothers fall in love with the same woman,
DUDE. It’s like they enter my brain! Brothers separated in childhood and one of them is a cop and the other a criminal! And a mobster in love! And siblings in love with the same person. Heee.
This said, has So Ji Sub ever been in a drama with a happy ending where he got to get the girl. Looking at ‘I am sorry I love you’ (which even I stayed away from as too angsty), ‘Something Happened in Bali’ and now this? His characters have the world’s lousiest karma :D
ETA: Oh. Now I am on chapter 114 of the manga and things got Kyo centric again and I am sniffling. Dammit. But Kyo's adoptive father is worried whether Tohru likes him as a human being or just pities him. And Rin asks Tohru why Kyo, because doesn't she know how the rest of the zodiacs look on him (and this is on the heels of the conversation Tohru had with Shigure who told her the pretty cruel truth that Kyo exists just to make the zodiacs feel better about themselves, because whatever else, they aren't cursed like that and that is what all the punishments are for too. ARGH). And Tohru has this outburst to Rin that even though she says she cares for everyone in the zodiacs and says she wants to free them from the curse it's only sophistry because all she is thinking of is that she doesn't want anything to take Kyo away from her, not the curse or anyone, and she can't stop it. Because Kyo is the most important person to her. OHHHHH.
