Wherein my Kyo love goes nuclear

I promise to be good and reply to all the replies. Once I finish hyperventilating that is.

OMG. I just started volume 12 of Fruits Basket.

My Akito hate is directly proportional to my Kyo love. And my Kyo love now knows no bounds.

OMG OMG OMG OMG.

Oh, oh, oh, oh. Poor Kyo. Poor, awesome, messed up darling.

Akito shows up at the summer house and calls all of the members of the zodiac to him but not Kyo. I love that this basically leaves Tohru and Kyo together. Love the adorable scene of Tohru building a really lame sand-castle and Kyo being dubious that this is what a sandcastle is supposed to be like but then admitting that he's never built one before (AWWWWW) so he would have no idea.

But of course then Akito happens. Because Akito is walking with Kureno (who he refers to as 'inferior.' HATE. Though, OMG, members of the Trio noticed that Kureno is off. I bet it's because he misses Uo. Akito's 'Kureno is my personal pet' vibe is still of the abusive bad!wrong variety, btw) and is all 'I took the zodiac members away from Tohru, she should know what it's like to be alone.' And I love that Kureno quietly points out that she is not alone, she has Kyo with her.

And Akito's reaction? (Which is when I started boiling). 'But is it really OK to be with a monster?' And the horrifying thing is, he isn't saying it to pick at Kyo (as Kyo is nowhere around), he truly sees Kyo as not even subhuman, but inhuman. His puzzlement and distaste make me...argh.

But then he sees Tohru and Kyo have fun on the beach. Poor darlings, they have no idea Akito is watching. I love how Kyo asks her whether she minds not swimming and she says no, she prefers being together to swimming (because of him being possessed by the cat spirit, he doesn't like water). And I die a bit. And there is hand-holding and awesomeness. And he tells her the story behind his bracelet (which is so so incredibly sad and creepy, that he has to wear that thing all the time), and I love that Tohru-like, her first thought about how he must feel, having to wear that.

And they are being young and adorable and OMG, Akito sees and can't bear it. And he goes 'such a carefree monster. Even though he killed his mother.'

Oh God. You do NOT mess with Kyo. I do not care what your excuse is. I don't care. I want someone to stab you in the face.

So then Akito calls for Kyo and I love how Tohru, being Tohru, tries to put a positive spin even on that. And then we get a totally horrific scene. meganbmoore, I know your hatred of Akito was set in stone over what he did to Tohru in this volume, but mine is set in stone in this volume as well, but it's because of what he did to Kyo.

Because Akito sets out to grind Kyo back into dirt and to eviscerate him emotionally, and he succeeds. HATE.

Side-note, I love how Kyo is upset that the summons means Tohru is left all alone, and Yuki warns Kyo not to blurt out something stupid in front of Akito no matter what Akito does. (Because OMG, everyone can tell how Kyo feels about Tohru) and I love how protective both Yuki and Kyo are of Tohru.

And then we get the Kyo-Akito scene. Reaction to which once again made Mr. Mousie ask if I hit something, because I was making that kind of noise. Wow. Akito only addresses Kyo as a monster, and he keeps telling him he can't be happy, because his mother died because of him ('because you were a monster, your mother died.') and reminds him that when graduation is there, he, Kyo, will be confined in a small dark room forever. And he reminds him of the bet he made with Kyo, that if Kyo beats Yuki, he will let him go. And then he tells Kyo, that this is part of the curse: Kyo can never ever beat Yuki, so it's all futile. And he tells Kyo, a 17 year old boy that it would have been better if Kyo died instead.

OMG.

OMG.

OMG.

I HATE AKITO.

And then, OMG, he delivers his coup de grace and it's about Tohru. And he says that he's hears she saw Kyo's true form but didn't abandon him, which means she must be a monster too. And he is all 'a monster for a monster.'

I want to stab Akito so BADLY.

And OMG, this is when Kyo snaps. And actually stands up to Akito, even though he wouldn't no matter what Akito said about him. And he yells she isn't a monster. And he, Akito, doesn't get it. And OMG OMG OMG

He is thinking, that he wasn't there to see how scared she was, but how she still wanted to be with him. And he thinks that of course she can't fix him, because no one person can, but she shows him that she can be with him, he doesn't have to be alone (which is the most awesome and true observation) and he just thinks how much he loves her.

OMG. He thinks 'I love you.'

He's figured it out. And he thinks how much he wants to do anything over and over to make her happy.

And this is the most awesome admission of love ever, even if it is purely internal.

But Akito latches on the the unfinished phrase and is all 'do you love her?' OMG OMG. And Kyo is horrified to have Akito figure it out and he tries desperately to protect Tohru, as Akito is 'do you know whose fault it is?' and Kyo is 'mine.' (OMG! Protective!Kyo)! And Akito is 'yes, in part, but it's largely hers.'

OMG. This is so incredibly abusive.

The whole 'see what you made me do' vibe (did I mention that during this lovely conversation, Akito also cut open Kyo's cheek?) is total abuser pattern.

And of course Kyo, who's been falling apart this whole conversation is really distraught now, and he is all 'I don't love her, no' and OMG.

Akito? Is all 'this is the first wise choice you made' and he tells him 'a monster is not allowed to fall in love' and adds that his future is that dark room and if he gets Kazuma or Tohru involved, it would be so much the worse for them. And he adds, that, never fear, 'I'll visit you when you are in the room, but for some reason you loathe me? But I love you.'

OMG.

And that is the end of that conversation, as Kyo staggers out. And Akito meticulously washes his hands, as even touching Kyo makes him feel sick.

There are no words for how much I hate Akito. Seriously, worst anime/manga character ever.

And then Kyo is going back, and he is falling apart (because Akito is SO good at psycholgical and emotional torture, and knows just what to hit. Especially since Kazuma tells Tohru later, that because of the connection, of Akito being their 'God,' words that would normally make them flinch, cut them open as if they were knives). And he is thinking despairingly as to why he was ever born and why didn't his Mom kill him instead. But then he flashes to Tohru. And I love how his love for her is his hope and his steadiness. And he is basically thinking he can't believe she'd care for him in any way but she does, and he feels so unworthy.

And he walks up and sees her with the sand castle. And OMG OMG OMG.

He thinks that he was selfish and wanted her with him in whatever future he was going to have, but 'I can't be this selfish and now I just want you to be with me for whatever time I have left.'

And he comes up and ruffles her hair and she asks him what he wants for dinner and OMG OMG there is teasing on his part and I die.

KYO.

KYOKYOKYOKYO.

I think he just might be my favorite manga character ever. He is so messed-up and broken (and he knows he is) but he tries so hard, and he is so incredibly giving despite his FUBAR life and has (to use a very corny phrase) grace of spirit. I want to murder Akito for what he is doing to him, and I am so impressed Kyo is such an awesome person with such a life.

And then when Tohru is only with Momiji, Akito comes and threatens her and scratches her face and tells her about Kyo's planned future of confinement (and Yuki's, to go back and live in Sohma's house). And I love that just as Kyo was thinking he would do anything to protect her, Tohru finally decided to get fed up, and to figure out how to break the curse, because she doesn't want Yuki to go back, or Kyo to be confined for the rest of his life (there is an awesome scene with the fireworks, where Kyo tells her how Kazuma showed him fireworks for the first time, and I love that everyone, Yuki and Kyo seem to be mellowing towards each other).

Hmmm, what else. Love Rin (though why was she hitting on Shigure?) Love when they go back to school and Tohru gets teased about a date, and it isn't, and there is looking and blushing on Kyo and Tohru's parts. And I love Tohru going to visit Kazuma to figure out what is going on, and how to break it.

Btw, I wonder what the 'little voice' that Tohru could barely hear in what Yuki and Kyo and she herself said. Is it referring to all the messed-up, hidden things in their past they normally don't bring up and will someday? Or their potential? No idea.

In conclusion, KYO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
