Smiling Pasta: cheestastic, tongue-in-cheek, and utterly delicious

Smiling Pasta+me=OTP.

Seriously. SP is a new dorama from Taiwan. Only four eps have aired so far and only the first two have been subbed, but what addictive eps they are. I've only seen the first ep, but I am hooooooked.

What is the premise? It reminds me a little of Full House (famous guy and normal girl get stuck pretending they are in a relationship), but only a little. It's a lot more off-kilter, madcap and crazy. It throws in everything and the kitchen sink: famous singers, school rivalry, lost lurve, constraining parents, rebellious angsty students/rockers. Basically think of Full House+Meteor Garden+Mars+Gokusen with a few other doramas thrown in. And yet it works works works. The actors are all adorable (I just want to smoosh the lead guy and girl together), the antagonist is all angsty and leather wearing, and most importantly, the show mocks itself. At one point, when the heroine is dumped yet again, a cartoon cloud appears over her and starts raining just on her, in a great parody of all the angstoriffic in the rain scenes.

Plot: Xiao Si, our heroine, is a college girl laboring under a love curse. She can't date anyone longer than three months as they all dump her. As a result of such latest break up, while walking down the street she bumps into out hero, He Qun, who is a famous young Taiwanese idol in an uber bad mood, as not only is he being chased by paparazzi, but the love of his life just dumped him. For his leather-wearing, bad-boy younger brother, no less. Due to a series of accidents, the two get entangled, things get misuderstood and hilarity and cuteness follows.

I am rather amused that our hero is a famous musician. Without it, the story would have been fairly normal melodrama/comedy dorama, but he fact that he is a F4 level superstar, yet the story has all the other components of a college dorama is extra layer of surreal fun. It's a delightful show. I am also amused at the fact that our hero, He Qun is a Pop Singer. He is well behaved, lives at home (which is actually something that would have surprised me if it wasn't for Bollywood. Superstars like Salman Khan, who is 40 and uber famous, still live with their parents there), and is sweet to his girl. His younger brother, Ah Zhe, is an underground rocker and wears a lot of leather, steals girls, and is really good at fighting. LOL.

So, our characters:

Xiao Si: Our heroine, a third year college student. She is sweet and funny and rather a darling. She comes from a large and delightful family who run a restaurant (hence the pasta in the title). She is also someone who puts too much pressure on boyfriends because she is afraid of the curse striking yet again. Which drives them away all the more. She shouldn't worry so much as the dorama shows us in a very tongue in cheek way the inevitability of her ending up with He Qun before they even meet.

He Qun: Our hero. This boy wears many many hats. He is a college student (older than XS, of course). He is also a famous idol musician whose appearances send girls screaming. And he is the oldest son of a prominent family (his father is a well known politician) who he is at odds with, as his father would like him to quit being a musician and being in tabloids as it might reflect badly on Daddy's political career. Yeah, the guy is busy. He also has a bit of a temper and is funny and cute and nice and is so endearingly amusing. I kinda like him. A LOT. I always go for good boys.

Ah Zhe: Our antagonist. He is He Qun's younger brother and (because everyone here is a musician) a member of an underground band. A rocker. A bad boy. He's moved out of the house, he wears leather and studs, and he gets into fights with bike gangs and wins to get back some bullied students their money. He hates He Qun because he blames He Qun for the death of his OTP. So he steals his girlfriend, Rita, as payback, but I doubt he is going to stop there, as he wants to make He Qun know what it's like to lose the one you love most. I foresee fireworks especially since Xiao Si has a crush on him. The niche of the hot, angsty, redeemable bad boy has been filled.

Rita:. He Qun has liked her since childhood. But she's only ever had eyes for Ah Zhe. And so, like a good girlfriend that she is, she ditches He Qun in the middle of a performance to run off with his brother. Short character description? Annoying bitchy secondary female lead with a rat's nest for hair.
