Ugh Shin Young is the. Worst. It doesn't help that the actress just does not know to emote and just has a blank look on her face until it's time for her lines. But the shoddy acting aside, her character is just so bland and it's hard to figure out where she lies in terms of the political shenanigans taking place. It's like her dream is literally to be that damsel in distress that needs sweeping off her feet. What's even more sad is that I get more OTP vibes from her interactions with Chi Ho than with Kang San which sucks because I need that kid to be happy.
Speaking of San, I'm worried about where the show is going with him because if I didn't know any better, I would think Chi Ho is the hero of this story. The role reversals are a bit jarring but I can get behind since I do like how Chi Ho is developing as a character but as a result, San's character trajectory suffers a bit. And yet it makes sense because San really has no choice and it's heartbreaking to see him compromise on his principles for the shot of a better life for him and his mom.
And I just love how Chi Ho has to kneel when he talks to Byeo Ri cuz she's just so damn tiny!!!
And where are my manners? I'm Cam btw but I've been stalking silently reading your lj posts for awhile for the kdrama posts lol. I honestly cannot remember the first time I stumbled upon your blog, it may have been when I was searching for discussion/thoughts on lj on Gaksital maybe haha! Anyways, I haven't really been active for awhile but would like to be again and what better way to awaken my inner fangirl with some kdrama discussion? lol
I think with SY it's a combination of a bland character with a bad actress. I think if they got e.g., Go Hyun Jung (I realize she is much too old for the role), then despite the writing, she'd be able to pull out nuances that aren't there. But Lee Eljia (sp?) is a total newbie and not one who is naturally gifted, either. The thing is, I am OK with a raw actress when the character is likeable - the heroine of Gaksital was played by a newbie as well, but the character itself was likeable and JSY had great chemistry with Joo Won (Le Eljia has zero chemistry with San, better chemistry with Chi Ho, but neither is making me fall down in joy).
I like San a lot (how could you not?) but with the latest episodes, I am Team Chi Ho all the way - I am sort of obsessed with him now. I am honestly reminded of Chuno dynamics a lot - I am a sucker for a big fall from power/position through principles and I have hopes that, as in Chuno, the two leading men will become friends eventually (and share equal screentime). Chuno flashbacks are also making me uncertain as to who SY would end up with, but the problem is, I wish I cared! I actually wish for Chi Ho to get together with Byeori, who has better chemistry with him, is 100 times more awesome than SY and has clearly developed a thing for him by now (and who could blame her?), plus gets gorgeous scenes with him. And for San, I really wish he got a better heroine, or even no heroine at all but some massive happiness of another sort.
Occasionally, I am indifferent to half of a pairing and only wish him/her together with the other half because I am rooting for the other half to get their heart's desire. But here, I dislike SY so much, that even though I know it would make CH or San happy to be with SY, I wish they'd get some other fun in life instead!
The hero/anti-hero blur is typical of PD Kwak. He did the same in Conspiracy in the Court too. I haven't actually watched this drama. I've been subbing it on Viki, but haven't actually had the chance to watch the episodes from start to finish.
So far, I'm digging Chi Ho. I don't care about San. In the least bit. I hate Shin Young. Princess. But that's all based on just subbing segments here and there.
Yeah, you are totally right about the character about Shi Young. I too thought JSY was a serviceable actress but her character was awesome so i was okay but Lee Elijah already has little material to work with already so her nonexistent emoting is doing her no favors.
Haha I'm on Team Both with slight bias for Kang San but Chi Ho is admittedly getting the better storyline right now. I've never seen Chuno but I am with you as well on hoping the two will join forces, ditch Shi Young, and succumb to the bromance already! If only Byeo Ri wasn't literally 14! I seriously thought they were just calling her a kid because she only LOOKED like a kid lol! But I read that this drama will span some years so maybe somewhere down the line it will be possible!
Haha, and I realized that I didn't even add you as a friend yet! Is that okay? I need more kdrama loving friends on LJ. I also noticed that you watch Answer Me 1994 which is my biggest jam at the moment and I need someone to spazz with lol!
