Very few people reading this LJ realize but I was a complete, obsessive Lord of the Rings fan years before I even had an LJ. I first read the books when I was 12 or so, devouring the pages, feeling the book more vividly than real life (the sense of dread in the sequence in Khazad Dum stayed with me for years). I remember when the news about the movie(s) to be made came out, I was in college. I was rooming with my best friend, who was also a Tolkien fan, and we both decided it was going to be bad and never live up to our childhood memories. How wrong we were! I saw the movies more times than I feel comfortable admitting in public, I took time off work to go to Trilogy Tuesday. I used to spend more time than was either sane or healthy at Council of Elrond and TheOneRing and I read way too much fanfic. When Mr. Mousie (who loves LOTR too) and I went to New Zealand in 2003, we did all the touristy 'see where LOTR was filmed' around Queenstown.
But then the years passed and, while I will always love LOTR, that love got reduced to the pre-movies stage - where I reread the books/rewatch the movies occasionally but in general fixate on other, newer things. But now The Hobbit is coming out and the fever is back! I can't imagine this movie will grab me as much as the LOTR trilogy did (because those movies are my favorite movies ever, and I've always preferred LOTR to The Hobbit), but I am still sick with excitement.
Oh, and because I can never post this enough, here is my favorite LOTR mv, set to my favorite Russian song. It probably makes much less sense if you are not a Russian speaker because the images match to the lyrics, but still...

Oh, where where are my LOTR icons?
What is your favorite LOTR character? Mine is Aragorn, not much surprise there.
