Pretty much every cap is spoilery so no caps outside the cut :)
(I apologize in advance - these caps are less HD than usual because 720p is taking forever so they are 450p).
He tried to save a man and that man died for him. That's going to scar you for life.
When he knocked Shunji out, I cheered. Hit him harder!
Repeatedly stabbing needles into corpses while yelling. Congratulations, Shunji, now you are certifiably insane. No wonder the staff look like they've seen a vampire. I don't even hate him any more, because he's clearly lost it entirely - I hated him while I still remembered the nice kind man he was but by now that is so far gone, I don't even have any feeling about him.
Meeep! Kang To and Mok Dan's Daddy are now allies! Well, Gaksital is, I think Daddy's mind would be blown if he knew KT=Gaksital. I love that KT doesn't speak during the meeting because that way there is no chance someone will recognize his voice. I think he agrees in part because that is what his brother would have done and in part because of the Comrade's death - he is very driven by guilt, isn't he?
Oh no, the look on Shunji's face - is he going to figure out that KT is never around when Gaksital is? Meeep, no, because Kang To knocked himself out in the dungeon by the time Shunji thought to check.
Also, are they roommates again? That's fucked up. And oh, when Shunji says "I think I am slowly becoming a monster" it breaks my heart so much. And when he adds that the moment he catches Gaksital, he is taking off the uniform and going back to teaching - oh my God. I lied - I still care - because it's horrible that he knows and yet cannot stop himself even as he is horrified at himself. "I put on a uniform to protect Mok Dan and with my own hands raised a sword to her and treated her like a rodent." That about sums up the horror of it all. And Kang To's devastated face, because he knows this is all his fault. It's such a parallel to that much earlier scene with Kang To seeking absolution and horrified at what he's become and Kang San knowing it's his fault but keeping quiet even as he is crying at his loved one's heart breaking. (Because without getting into slash, it's clear KT loves Shunji like a brother).
Oh, KT, you are talking to the dead. Not great for sanity. And they make the parallel I talked about above explicit, with KT saying "Shunji is like me." In a way, this makes KT understand his older brother and how he felt, caring for someone trying to kill him, unable to say anything, better than anything else could have. He has really stepped into Kang San's place now. And when he asks with a little sob "Hyung, someday Shunji will have to see Gaksital's face?" my heart breaks. Because KT remembers how awful it was for both him and KS when the earlier version of this happened. I think he is accepting he is likely to share Kang San's fate in this one little statement but he is still grieving for the hurt both he and Shunji will go through. And then he raises the horror stakes even higher, by wondering if before that day comes, he might have to kill Shunji (and it's so telling that at that thought he doesn't flash at Shunji doing horrid stuff but sobbing heart-breakingly into his pillow, terrified of himself). And then when he says "Hyung, I am so scared," it kills me - because when he's being all derring-do, you don't see that scared KT - there is no time. But the fact that he keeps doing it and is scared all the time - oh God. Seriously, this drama is the most depressing thing ever. But it also makes what KT does matter even more - that he's terrified but he still does it. And then he says - "Lee Kang To, all Joseon people hate him, but to save me, because I was wearing the bridal mask, to save me...he died." And that's the crux of the matter, isn't it? (Also, this scene highlights both how young and how alone KT is - all those doubts and fears and nobody to share them with).
Yay, Mok Dan is fantasizing about the right Gaksital this time :) (Also, she's hardcore, planning to leave the capital so Gaksital won't be in danger).
I just like this shot.
Every scene btw KT and MD just bristles with chemistry. I love it when he drags her into a room and she tries to stab him again. Also, his pained question to her "You are leaving Kyung Sung, do you think you'll be able escape from my grasp?" reads incredibly different to her as she doesn't know he's Gaksital. And he pretty much gives her a warning, without appearing to do so, that the cops are onto the rebels' plan and that there is a mole. She is so steeped in her preconceived notions of him, it never occurs to her no way would be be stupid enough to reveal that stuff unless he wanted to.
Oh fuuuck, Rie saw him leaving Mok Dan's hotel. And Shunji is also wondering where he went...eeek. You are skirting close to disaster, Kang To!
Rie came to see Mok Dan as a fake nun but our Mok Dan is sharp and noticed the seeming nun didn't cross herself. Acting fail, Rie! And then Mok Dan does a few little tests and Rie fails. Heee, this is what underestimating Mok Dan and not prepping well will cause! Bwahahaha, Mok Dan totally leads Rie down the wrong path, helping the Resistance and Gaksital immeasurably.
Gaksital uses his newly freed time to burn some papers. Heh. And to beat up evil news dude. He was annoying so it's OK. Just keep the count for last, please. (Also, KT is less bloodthirsty than his big bro, it seems).
Oh Shunji, you are back for your tour on the evil bus. "We need to catch Oh Mok Dan." Luckily you say that in front of Kang To! The thing is, Shunji, despite whatever regrets he feels in the dark of night, was able to write his first love Mok Dan off because she views him as a Japanese 'bastard' and hates him. Interestingly, Kang To was not able to write Mok Dan off under identical circumstances.
Oh, great, Shunji now hit that naive girl who crushed on him. There's monomania and there is this. I am back to my default 'DIAF, Shunji!' state.
Eeeep, when Kang To is mad worried, I swoon!
OK, Shunji, you chased her with a troop of goons and then shot her. I think you officially win the "worst secondary guy" award in kdramaland.
EEEE! Gaksital appears, ILY, Kang To!
Mok Dan is so awesome, interrupting Shunji and Kang To's sword fight with a gun! So Kang To and Mok Dan save each other. I love that Shunji is shocked and cries - dude, you had her tortured, chased her with goons and shot her, what did you think?
OMFG the final scene when he lifts her from the horse in his arms! And they stare at each other and then she just hugs him (and of course she had to do it first because he'd never allow himself) and then he looks like he can't believe it and slowly his arms go around her and they cling to each other and OMFG!!!
