I have a new obsession, a 2010 period cdrama Too Late To Say I Love You (Lai Bu Ji Shuo Wo Ai Ni/来不及说我爱你).
Too Late is set in the turbulent early decades of the 20th-century, so perhaps it is quite appropriate that the heroine's romantic choice revolves between a warlord-in-training and an arms dealer. (A warlord-in-training or an arms dealer - who's the girl to choose?) There are guns, fights, amazing clothes, undying love, and one of the most intense and dysfunctional relationships it has been my privilege to obsess about.
Our heroine, Jing Wan (Li Xiao Ran), has a pretty straightforward mission - to convince the new warlord, Murong Feng (Wallace Chung) to release her arranged fiance, who has gotten nabbed as a result of a botched arms deal. Only guess who falls in love? Perhaps Jing Wen shouldn't have saved a handsome stranger's life on that train...
Much angst abounds, at one point the heroine runs away from her wedding to be with warlord, and the whole thing is delicious...
I am pretty sure this won't end well. Period cdramas with happy endings are freakishly rare and seeing that the heroine's true love is a warlord-to-be, I am sure this is going to go well. Especially since, apparently, her fiance gets so pissed at being jilted that he allies with the Japanese, in a move straight out of psychotic secondary guy playbook (sure, that will totally make her love you again, genius!)
I am currently reveling in the yummy yummy dysfunction. Rarely have I seen a drama hero as obsessed/single-minded/devoted to the heroine as in this. Heroine is at the stage of "I don't love you!" Though perhaps her protestations would be more convincing if they weren't interspersed with cuddling sessions with the Warlord Jr. on (formerly his, currently her*) bed and discussions of military strategy.
Also, there was this awesome exchange:
Warlord: I am going to make every woman's dream come true for you!
Me: Is he going to offer her marriage? babies? undying devotion?
Warlord: I am going to make the world kneel at your feet!
Me: ... OK, then.
* Apparently she got sick and he offered her his room and moved out. Because apparently even a turn-of-the-century warlord is more considerate of the woman he loves than the supposed romantic ideal of Sealed with a Rapey Kiss.
First ten eps are subbed (9 on youtube and 10 on viki). The total ep count is 36 and I am obsessed enough to watch raws...
