I would have never thought a verbal fight about pictographic v. alphabetized writing (between Chae Yoon and the Crown Prince) could be so fascinating. As someone who has always used an alphabet (mine was created by two people, actually - monks Cyril and Methodius), I never thought how alien the concept of alphabet would be to someone living in a purely pictographic world. It's like trying to explain the alphabet to the Sumerians.

Fascinating. Language, especially philology (though this isn't precisely that) always interested me. Who knew a kdrama was going to hit on that interest.

Oh, and the issue from the past post has been resolved to my satisfaction - the drama doesn't seem to agree that ability to sacrifice your kid for the cause is a great thing. It is only CY's nutso test and Crown Prince's defiance of CY's obstinacy, and I can be fine with that.

I do find it interesting the drama has, for the time being, dropped Chae Yoon's argument that alphabet is pointless because poor people are opressed due to lack of status, not illiteracy. Probably because it's not something that can be addressed to Chae Yoon's satisfaction in the 1500s, and if they kept it as his main argument about alphabet pointlessness, it would never go anywhere, because Joseon isn't turning into equality kingdom any time soon.
