How is it that I am falling in love more and more with this drama with each episode? At this point, it is behind only The Myth as my favorite cdrama. Apparently the ratings aren't great and it is a complete pity, but I actually get why JPLH was more successful - there is no clear-cut good guy/bad guy divide here (both Four and Eight are all shades of grey) and the shippy stuff is messy. Also, this is a character and mood piece - if I think about it, there has not been much traditional plot so far. I don't care because this is so gorgeous and smart and makes me love the characters so, I do not find lack of traditional narrative off-putting, but I can see how it won't be everyone's cup of tea.
Ok, first, I need more Four/Ruoxi ASAP. We haven't had nearly enough of them yet and every interaction leaves me gasping for more with its combo of chemistry, undercurrents, sharpness, and fun - it's like everything comes into focus when they have scenes together. Also, by now it is clear to pretty much everyone but Ruoxi that poor Four is utterly smitten, but he is showing it in such a brusque way, she is not noticing (well, that and she is having Eight-shaped stars in her eyes). But ahhh, those quick intense pleased glances he gives her totally kill me. Also, he is clearly thinking she likes him, which is an understandable mistake on his part, and is rife with potential.
Eight, I continue to adore him but I just can't ship him with Ruoxi. Four likes her for herself but Eight likes her for shadows of Ruolan and she deserves to be loved for herself. Also, while both Four and Eight are equally complicated and intimidating, somehow she feels more equal with the former, perhaps because she is not crushing on him (her annoyance when he came to teach her riding was hilarious, especially since she thought he was Thirteen and was all 'why don't we lie on the blanket together?' and be says OK. LOL. Seriously, he has a very dry sense of humor).
Speaking of Thirteen, I continue to adore him. Is he going to have a thing with the Mongolian princess or was I just imagining things? I confess, he is my favorite of the brothers and the only one I'd consider hooking up with (significantly, his personality reminds me a lot of Eight's personality in JPLH and I was obsessed with him - clearly I have a type when it comes to Qing royalty). I mean, he is strong-willed and not a dummy like Ten but he is also not dreadfully complicated liked Four and Eight are.
Ahhh, Eight. I almost wish he and Ruolan ended up in two different countries a thousand miles apart, because every time he is in her presence, he looks at her with those hopeful, beaten-puppy eyes and I want to die. I think that is why he is so kind and understanding with his first wife - because the way she feels towards him is the way he feels towards Ruolan - hopeless adoration of someone who cannot love you back.
You know who I love? Kang Xi. Never thought I would but he is smart and charismatic, if also scary as hell.
Random thought - I love these elaborate hairpieces, but do the ladies ever take them down? I mean, do they have sex with their hair still up??? I guess we may be lucky and find out ;)
One niggle (one I have had with every time-travel drama except The Myth) - Ruoxi adjusted very well - she feels almost like a period person now. I would think she would stick out more, at least in her inner life. But I guess then the story would be lopsided.
Final comment - visually, this may be the most beautiful drama I have ever seen.
