I have just finished the first episode of Crime Squad and I am almost shaking.
It is so so good. It is amazingly good. It has killed my kdrama slump dead (there is no kdrama except for it that is airing right now that I want to watch but it doesn't matter because CS is so amazing it compensates for all).
A gritty police drama with a dual structure I adore (ep-long cases and an overarching, drama-long arc), this is dark and smart and heartbreaking (when was the last time I cried in the first ep of the drama?) and occasionally very funny.
It is anchored by a rock-solid cast led by Song Il Gook and Lee Jong Hyuk as two very different police officers, a subordinate and his superior, both irrevocably scarred by their shared past. SIG and LJH are both powerhouse actors and this drama benefits hugely from their presence as so much of their dynamic, their personalities, their scars are unspoken - just the way they hold themselves or the look in their eyes. I love the way SIG's character maintains his humanity, despite it all. I love his barely controlled rage and his familiar grief. I love how LJH's coldness and control hides regret and ever-present devastation (though honestly, I don't blame him for his choice 5 years ago. But to say more would be spoilery). This is so good.
I am also very fond of Song Ji Hyo (Jumong reunion for her and SIG!), playing a smart, compassionate crime reporter. That lady is fierce and funny and awesome. I want her to heal SIG's horrible emotional scars and become a crime-fighting power couple. Sun Woo Sun (who hs yet to appear but I am sure I'll love her) should get LJH :P
Oh, and everyone's favorite mobster prince Woobin, i.e. Kim Joon, is in this too.
So, why are you guys not watching it yet? Darksmurf has subs.
