China goes twofer for kdrama remakes

Two big kdrama hits are getting Chinese remakes and my main reaction is - whyyyyy?

Remake n1 is cdrama version of that (in)famous weepie Autumn in My Heart, otherwise known as the drama where kids who were brought up as siblings meet as adults and fall for each other. It's OK as it turns out they are not related. Ooops, she gets cancer and dies, and he's hit by a truck. Clearly, karma is telling them sibcest is a sin. No, I am not making this up. cdrama decided one go at the hystericathon is not enough and is remaking it with Zhang Han (best known as Mainland Domyouji. Well, at least he'll be making out with a fake sister and not a real one, a la Japanese Domyouji) as tragic hero, Jiang Kaitong as tragic heroine, and Dennis Oh as hero's best friend who falls for heroine to much angst. I find Dennis Oh's inclusion a bit weird, but he probably speaks Mandarin about as well as he speaks Korean :P. He also can't act his way out of a paper bag, but as long as he looks pretty while crying, I don't believe anyone will care.

Don't be fooled by the grins, they are more like death grimaces! I may check this out of sheer trainwreck syndrome.

Remake n2 is of the big romcom hit My Girl with Jimmy Lin in the lead role. My reaction is an even bigger "whyyyyyy?" than it is to AiMH remake. I adore Jimmy Lin to bits but My Girl is my most perfect romcom. I don't even like the genre and I adore MG with a fierce passion. I fail to see the need. No to mention, Jimmy Lin's own My Lucky Star was, in a lot of ways, a take on My Girl if Yoo Rin wanted Jung Woo instead.

Oh well. At least nobody marries his cancerous sister in that one.

remakes, my girl, autumn tale, doramas3
