It's a toss-up which of the two upcoming September dramas I am most excited for - this or Sungkyunkwan Scandal.
You know, my anticipation for both MK and Scandal demonstrated to me that my love for romcoms isn't dead entirely - I've just gotten more picky (after all, two of the dramas I loved this year could qualify in the category - Pick the Stars and Prosecutor Princess). So I think my total indifference to Gumiho Girlfriend is not just because it's a romcom - for some reason it just doesn't work for me. And I am trying to figure out why all the three episodes I have seen leave me so cold because from the objective standpoint, Gumiho is a well-made drama. I don't even have the problems I had with its predecessor, You're Beautiful - the heroine is no pushover and while I don't like the hero we are not supposed to yet (yes, Dae Woong is a dweeb but we are supposed to see him as one). And I cannot complain about lack of plot or character development because we are only on ep 4. And I can't claim it's because romcom is a genre that doesn't work for me - while my default is to gravitate to dramas where romance is important but secondary (look at Chuno, my favorite drama this year - the romance in that one was not just heartbreaking but the soul of the story and the crux of its many conflicts: slavery, injustice, class system, what path should a righteous person take, etc - but Chuno was hardly was all about romance - it was the underpinning but not the main theme) there are certainly plenty of my favorite dramas where romance is front and center (my favorite kdrama, Worlds Within, is all about the relationship between its protagonists).
No, it's something about Gumiho Girlfriend itself but I cannot, for the life of me, figure out what. I even went to drambeans (something I try to avoid because her opinions are 180 degrees from mine so it gets a little weird reading her blog) in hopes that her gushing posts and replies to them would help me to see what I am missing. But reading her gushing recaps and commenters' ecstasy still left me cold. I am completely disconnected from Gumiho Gf. I am trying so hard to fall for Gumiho Girlfriend but it's not happening. I wonder if a lot of it because of the hero - the incompetent/wimpy/dweeby/immature combo isn't something I like and he has not moved past it yet. Not to mention, I am shallow enough to have been able to get past it if Dae Woong was an Adonis but even though everyone in South Korea loves Lee Seung Gi and I happen to agree he is an amazing singer and a good actor (and I loved him in Brilliant Legacy to bits) he is not a looker at all so there is nothing to distract me from the deficiencies of his character. And Miho herself, while likeable, is too other/alien for me to glom onto. But I honestly don't know - I am guessing because, on paper, GG is everything I should like it but when I watch it I am not enthralled or hating. It's worse - I am bored.
