I have started a rewatch of one of my all-time favorites

I was in a very bad mood last evening, so I did what every girl will do - bought a dozen-and-a half cupcakes and put in the DVDs of My GirlThe cupcakes were overly ambitious (I ate 2. Luckily my Lord and Master likes cupcakes as well and we have a fridge) but My Girl was, as always, perfect. I only got through half an ep before needing to go to bed ( Read more... )

My Girl made me laugh so much during the first half. But the last few episodes infuriated me. I need to rewatch though. It really is an excellent drama. And make an MV.

Infuriated? Why? I loved the second half even more, because it made me laugh but it also made me bawl - I got so ridiculously invested.

I think I was just too angry at the grandfather & very annoyed that everyone obeyed his rediculous commands. (the filialty in Kdramas is amazing but sometimes it runs smack into my American upbringing & makes me yell, "Why?!! Stand up for yourself!!")

I hated that he kept the discovery of his granddaughter a secret & that "forgave" the main girl but sent her away. And then they still had to beg him at the end. I had really liked the grandfather until that point so I felt a little betrayed. I guess I don't mind that kind of thing if I feel that it helps the characters develop but I didn't feel that that part of the storyline really did anything. It didn't confirm main guy's feelings - they were already confirmed. So I never understood the point.

I was very not surprised when he went 'evil' - it just seemed to make sense - he was a benevolent dictator only when things went his way - he clearly didn't learn anything from his past and most people do not - I bet if he disowned GC/YR, he would have been quite sad if they got killed in a car crash or similar.

I actually loved that part - I love my angst and to me it really showed how much Yu Rin and Gong Chan loved each other (she was willing to sacrifice so much to keep him with his family and he never was going to let go no matter what it would have cost him - and he believed her despite her trying to make her best to make him view her as evil) and added dramatic conflict - it was relatively too smooth up until then. It just confirmed the depth of their love to me.

Actually, I didn't think they were too filial - Gong Chan was clearly hell-bent on being with Yu Rin whatever his family thought and whatever it would have cost him, and Yu Rin was doing what she was doing to protect Gong Chan (and what kind of woman would she be if she was OK with him ruining himself for her - especially seeing how much she values family and security, having had neither).

I can see it that way. I guess I also get mildly annoyed at the "for your own good" actions that are so common in romance dramas. Yes, I'd be tempted to act that way myself but I'd be pissed if it was done to me. lol - what a double standard.

LOL - it makes sense with the double standard, though - I have it myself.

Still, Yu Rin would be pretty unlikeable if she blithely went along with Gong Chan's plans and if she told him the truth he'd never let go. I loooove that stuff in dramas, I confess. (Btw, that airport scene when he looks for her in ep 14 is one of my fave drama scenes ever).

I remember literally shouting at the screen during the airport scene. :)

It really is a good drama. I think I'd like it a lot better the 2nd time around since I wouldn't be so betrayed by the grandfather & therefore be able to focus on & enjoy the rest of the story. And I really enjoyed the little side romance of the aunt & that guy, too.

I didn't start screaming until he was begging his grandfather on his knees, weeping, and the old bastard just sat there utterly unmoved.

ahshfrikhfjfhg. Just thinking about it gives me rage.
