In retrospect the ending doesn't bother me re: Dong Chul. Honestly, while he had a pretty awful life and deserved a happy ending more than a lot of drama heroes, the man was part of organized crime for years and years...When I first found out the ending I was much less OK but I got used to it.
I do get BLINDING RAGE when I think about what they did with Dong Wook's character and the senseless character assassination which turned an idealist who was almost ridiculously self-sacrificial and the one "purely good" person in the drama into an unfeeling bastard and then back to his awesome self again, in the space of the last few eps just to set up a totally unbelievable (psychologically) conflict. I don't mind seeing a story of a wonderful man going bad and then coming back, if it's believable but the way it went - grrrrr. Maybe because while I adored Dong Chul, I think I loved Dong Wook even more- he was just so amazing and I thought it was such a good point about the stupidity of 'blood will out' as he was the evil guy's son (the big plot point is he and Dong Chul's real brother got switched at birth and I loved that DW grew up good and DC's real brother was an evil basketcase).
And don't even get me started on the resolution of the story of Ji Hyun (the girl loved both by Dong Wook and Myung Hun, DC's "real" brother). Hooray! She finally fell for her husband - congrats. He's loved her for years and was patient with her, even taking all blame on himself so as he'd go to jail in her place. But wait - isn't he the man who got her tortured (and the man she loved tortured), and then raped her and made her pregnant. I seriously get SUCH RAGE. I can even to believe that he seriously repented and tried very hard to become a good person. Maybe even that he really did become a good person. I am certainly willing to buy that he would get Ji Hyun freed. But the fact that she fell for him at the end? WTF!!!!!!! STAB.
By the end, the Dong Chul/Young Ran was the only part that really worked for me.
oooops, sorry got carried away - about characters you haven't even seen :)
ETA: Funnily, the most romantic scene for me in EoE was not DC/YR but Dong Wook/Ji Hyun - when he is released from torture center and finds out she was raped and runs to her house, banging on the glass and weeping and begging her to let him in and she just sits there with her back turned away, unmoving.
