Drama randomness of the day...

1. I have figured out a long time ago that if there is one genre that never ever without exception works for me it is a Japanese over-the-top high school comedy, with hordes of malnourished, hair-gelled boys, girl heroine optional. Every other genre I am generally iffy on has exceptions (e.g. I am not big on office lady romances with younger men as a rule, but I adore Brand and Sapuri) but this one does not. I blame Hana Yori Dango for the existence of this subgenre - Hanadan wasn't a comedy but a romance with some very funny and some very angsty parts, but it was also a wildly successful adaptation of a shoujo manga and it started a trend. Yup - the one other thing I dislike as much as OTT teeny comedies are jdrama adaptations of shoujo manga. Except for Hanadan, I've disliked every single one of them. Hana Kimi. Zettai Kareshi. *shudder*

So please then explain to me why on earth am I so excited about Otomen which is, you guessed it, a jdrama adaptation of a shoujo manga set in a high school with a lot of (presumably malnourished and hair-gelled) boys. I love the manga, but then I did love both Hana Kimi and Zettai Kareshi as mangas. And yet, I can't help it. I want to watch!

Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy?

2. Ahahahahahaaaaa

This is from ep 5 of Easy Fortune Happy Life which I shall henceforce rename "Kissorama". Seriously - he's kissed her in the first ep, twice if you count 'past life' stuff (and there was other kissing too), here it is fifth ep - when does he have the time in-between hiring killers to off her? :)

I am addicted to EFHL even if it's very silly :) Also, apparently, as of now, Hubby doesn't know that the mysterious fiancee he's hired a hit man for is that plucky village girl he's been having a fun running fight with. LOL. Ahhh, Taiwan.

3. Because thinking of Hanadan made me remember this: I got so annoyed when I read someone's comment somewhere that the reason BOF went off the rails in the second half was because it was a Korean drama - they said something to the effect that the second half became very kdrama. I got so irritated by the assumption that kdramas are by definition bad. Ummm, no. Not only are there are plenty of well-done kdramas but the reason second half of BOF sucked was not because it was a kdrama but because it was a badly written one. No kdrama gives its heroine a personality transplant and its hero a lobotomy in the middle with no explanation. No good kdrama. One could easily Koreanify Hanadan without doing that. I really hate it when people have a knee-jerk reaction about dramas because of their place of origin. Through a lot of drama-watching, I have found, e.g. that I am most compatible with Korean dramas, but it doesn't mean I assume Japanese or Taiwanese dramas are inferior - there are plenty of good dramas from both places. An average Korean drama is more likely to appeal to me than an average Japanese drama but I am hardly going to never ever give any Japanese drama a chance because OMG it's from Japan.

4. Someone at soompi is having the following opinion about Brilliant Legacy: Heroine betrayed Secondary Guy by not loving him back when he was so nice to her and did things for her (I hasten to add that in BL when he confessed she told him she doesn't feel anything yet and as soon as she figured out she likes someone else, she informed him). Basically, the guy was nice to her so she owes him to love him. Hello, feminism. (Don't even get me started on discussions in fandom where guy X or guy Y should end up with the girl because he 'deserves' her through being hot/good/whatever. A woman is not a prize).

5. I have discovered dorama_ru. I love that comm!
