OK, kdrama writers - this is how you write a quadrangle. I don't think I have ever seen it done perfectly before - honestly. This is how you do it - you make me love all four people involved equally. But you also don't go overboard and make the choices made by characters believable - I might prefer Duhmi with Bin, but I can understand why she loves Dong Young and find him worthy of her love. And my favorite character just might be Koh Hee, in any other drama portrayed as an evil other woman.
Seriously, this drama is so pitch-perfect (in everything - in various familial relationships, in the political/duty/fashion subplots, in everything).
Koh Hee proposes to Dong Young and he tells her he cannot as he loves someone else. And asks Bin to check up on her. Such a gorgeous scene...
Btw, so far DY/Duhmi a rare instance of "I left her for her own good" done well. Because a. he did leave her - he wants her to find someone else to love - he expects nothing from her. And b. he knows he is going on a spy mission which is greatly likely to result in his death (his boss tells him to make out a will) so I can see why he doesn't want her to pine. Also, it's not as if he faked not loving her or similar kdrama thing. But mmmmm, yummy spy angst when he sees her and can't believe his eyes and follows.
And then, when I am back on the Dong Young/Duhmi train (so much guilt and duty!), they give me a scene like that, where after a scene from hell with his Mother, Bin begs Duhmi to hold him. *meeeelt*
I think this scene between Koh Hee and Dong Young is my favorite scene so far. And you know, I think she is right - he was tired and worn out, both physically and psychically and then he saw a joyful energetic village girl and glommed onto that joy and energy. But that doesn't make it any less love - even if Koh Hee can explain away the beginning of his feelings, it doesn't make those feelings themselves less true. The thing is, someone like Dong Young is very reserved - he is kind but has huge walls - he needs someone as direct and full of happiness and outgoingness as Duhmi. He and Koh Hee are too similiar - both too crippled in their various ways, to have really worked for each other, IMO. I think that joy is why both Bin and DY glom onto Duhmi, and also why Koh Hee herself is drawn to her. Duhmi is no dummy (pun!) but she is blessedly uncomplicated - because unlike the rest of them she forgot the horrors of war and past.
You know, so far, everyone in this acts like a grown-up. They are forthright and open about their feelings except when they must not be for a good reason etc etc.
A few pretty caps mainly of DY because before this I never got the fuss about Joo Jin Mo.
