Dhoom 2: In Which the Bad Guys Have all the Fun!

Dec 16, 2008 00:44

I defy you to watch Dhoom 2 and not to emerge in a complete hormonal frenzy.

Ostensibly, the plot follows the adventures of a tough cop (Abhishek Bachchan) and his goofy sidekick (Uday Chopra) who are trying to catch a super-thief (Hrithik Roshan). Or at least that is the way it was supposed to go at the planning stage, I think. But somehow between planning and filming things turned inside out, if for no other reason that they signed up Hrithik Roshan to play the super-thief. Any present-day (i.e. post Koi Mil Gaya) director who has Hrithik in a movie and doesn't center it around him is possibly insane and probably perversely against earning money. Not to mention that Hrithik is the only "younger" Bollywood actor I can see who has that ineffable something associated with star power: when he is on screen you just want to look at him and no one else. Sorry, Abhishek Bachchan, I love you and all, but when it comes to star wattage, you lose!

Anyway, instead of what was probably the original outline, D2 became about the awesome yet woobieish super-thief Aryan (Hrithik has never looked hotter in his life. When I first saw him on the screen in D2 I literally gasped), his quest to evade the rather dour and irritating cop, his clever plans to steal various artworks, and (best of all, for me) his love affair with a starting-out fellow thief, the brash Sunehri (Aishwarya Rai). In fact, the movie-makers nailed the coffin for anyone becoming interested in the good guys by casting the Hrithik/Aish combo. Arguably the most beautiful woman in Bollywood, Aishwarya is also one of the very few women in BW who can keep up with Hrithik on the dance floor. Even more amazingly, Aishwarya who has never had much chemistry with her co-stars simply sizzled with Hrithik. Just check out all the dozens of Hrithik/Aishwarya vids on youtube! Personally I find RPFing them icky because both are married to other people (Aishwarya is married to Abhishek Bachchan, amusingly enough) and Hrithik is a father of two, as well, but...I guess it means the chemistry worked.

Anyway, I bring you some awesome D2 caps. The plot is typical silliness but I swear, you won't care...not with the hotness and the chemistry and bit a dysfunctional OTP. Cap quality not as good as I wish because quality of source isn't as good as my DVD. Hotness still shows.

The nightclub scene. No wonder he is smitten.

"My theft mentor is hot. Score!"

I'd stare too, if I had Aish in my house!

Only in Bollywood! He has learned her deep dark secret and must work out the deep dark feeling of betrayal in his heart...by taking her to a giant party and dancing. I love this like pie.

The kiss that ended in an obsenity lawsuit. ROFL. It's a closed mouth kiss, people!

This scene makes me LOL.

Hrithik/Aishwarya became one of my top Bollywood on-screen couples after D2, and Jodhaa-Akbar proved their chemistry wasn't a fluke. Now they are going to co-star in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's next, and seeing that SLB (Devdas, Saawariya) is my favorite Bollywood director, and nobody can portray love the way he does? Oh...it's my dream come true!

This is a cool Hrithik/Aish D2 vid:
