BSG Ramble...

I am as giddy at the prospect of Battlestar Galactica tomorrow, as it's possible to be.

And this made me think about something in particular about BSG (triggered in part by queenofthorns' marvelous post hereI love Season 4's premiere and I did love season 3, so I clearly don't mind the 'mystical destinies' story-turn (especially since it seems pre-programmed, ( Read more... )

Does this even make sense?

yes. I agree. It was more fun when they were discovering the possibility of mysticism but Roslin was taking a traditional drug (as opposed to being "chosen") and so on. It was a mysticism that seemed inherent in their culture, so it could pop up anywhere.

I suppose you could fanwank it into the prototypes for these mystical heroes being present in even a random sampling of the population or whatever.

I think even if Cylons had plans for Galactica, it still didn't mean it would turn out the way it did: they could have blown up on the way or gotten psycho. But I agree, I miss the lack of safety net of no special destinies.

I agree with your assessment ENTIRELY and you have made me realize what it is that I've been searching for in the most recent seasons! Like you, I LOVED the season 4 premier and while I've certainly watched my fair share of mystical/supernatural shows that's not how BSG started out so there is a little adjustment. Now I'm going to go read that post you linked to, thanks!

I stopped watching BSG for many reasons and the whole mystical destiny element was one part. I am curious though now that some of them know their destinies, as it were, to see if they can alter them and how that plays out.

Every time I see your icon I crack up.

And reaction to knowledge of destiny. Isn't it a sort of Oedipus' problem...if he didn't know, he wouldn't try to avoid it and thus fulfill it?

Part of the reason I love Lee so is it seems he is still not connected to any mythical destiny stuff.

Shh! You'll jinx it! Then all three of Kara's men will be Cylons, which makes a certain amount of sense, but I so don't want the show to go there.

But Lee is biological son of Adama unless there is a huge twist, so I suppose we are safe? I hope.
