Que Sera Sera: let us show our beautiful dysfunction

Feb 10, 2008 12:58

I have started Que Sera Sera, a 17-ep kdrama that came out last year, starring Eric Mun, Jung Yu Mi, Yoon Ji Hye, and Lee Kyu Han.

I have always wanted to watch it, because a number of people on my flist liked it a lot (I mean, any drama that has fivil interested in dysfunction is something special :P). So far, I am one episode in and it's quite excellent. The closest drama to it I've seen is I think Something Happened In Bali (only much faster-paced), with its tormented, complicated, not-so-nice characters who prize money and appearance more than feeling but get swept away.

The Plot involves the entanglement of four rather messed-up characters: Kang Tae Joo (Eric Mun) is someone who has always been able to pick up women because of his killer looks. Not that he gets emotionally invested: hard-headed and cynical, his women have to be well-off and generous as, while he is not a gigolo, a gift or three will never go amiss. Han Eun Soo (Jung Yu Mi) is none of the things Tae Joo prefers in his women: she is not elegant, rich, or poised. (Think a much more together version of the heroine of MISA). And yet their paths cross and they end up falling in love. Could he give up what he normally wants for her though, especially, considering he is also contract-dating Cha Hye Lin (Yoon Ji Hye), a rich, brittle hottie. And then there is Shin Joon Hyuk (Lee Kyu Han), who ends up involved with all other three and might just end up being Eun Soo's rebound choice.

Anyway, as I am only one ep in, I don't have that many observations except:

1. I love the way this is shot: the colors and the composition is gorgeous. I could just stare at the images...

2. I love the heroine (what little we've seen so far). It's hard to play 'eccentric' and 'off-kilter' and come across as charming and not weird or hysterical. She is adorable.

3. ERIC MUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG. I space out every time I stare at him. I think I now know why the phrase 'brutally hot' was invented. I am finishing this drama even if it ends up being awful just so I can stare at him. On a less shallow note, I am definitely interested in his character: he is clearly not a perfect person and very hard-edged, but there are little hints of vulnerability which he totally tries to bury. I like my fictional men to be beautiful messes, and I think he will fit the bill.

4. I actually like the Other Girl so far. Or perhaps 'like' is the wrong word: she is a high-maintenance bitch. But I can see where she is coming from.

So far? AWESOME.

Here is an awesome shippy MV about the main OTP:

Got it from soompi. Let it not be said I am not shallow:

And here is the clip that convinced me to move it up my watch list ASAP. When he says 'saranghae' in the rain, I sort of die.
