So. I'm usually someone who can make up her mind pretty quickly about things. I can make decisions based on the repercussions my actions will have, on myself, on my friends and family, on those around me, on the world, and on the universe.
Right now, I'm hung up on a decision that I've never had to make before.
One of the choreographers from New Moves last semester got picked to re-present her piece in the UDT show (in which I'm already in 4 pieces). I wasn't in it originally, but she wanted me in it last semester. (I wasn't in it because the rules said I couldn't be...) One of the dancers who was picked for it turned out to be a major flake, and yet stayed through the semester because the choreographer kept giving her chances. She ended up being a major disappointment during the weekend of the show. She meant well and everything. She just didn't have the commitment to the piece and to the process.
Okay, so skip ahead to this semester. I get an email from the choreographer asking me to take this dancer's place. First of all, I'm not really the best of friends with the choreographer. I performed with her in another piece, but I also took a class with her last year and in both situations found her to be bitchy and bossy and extremely controlling.
However, I could put that aside to learn and perform her piece in the show. I can be the bigger person and put that aside.
Where I get caught is that I don't want the original dancer to hate me. Okay, I know this sounds so high school. But I really don't want to make anyone my enemy if I don't have to. Apparently the choreographer told her "You're being replaced by Claire." If she hadn't used my name, I wouldn't have this internal debate going as loudly as it is.
I'm just putting myself in her position. She really wanted to be in the piece, she really tried her best and I think had fun doing the piece. I'm not a better dancer than she is, per se. I just have a different style and performance quality, one that the choreographer wants to try.
Meh. I'm torn. On the one hand, I want to do it to expand my performance experience and learn a new piece this semester. On the other hand, I know that if I had a piece ripped away from me, I'd be pretty upset.
Advice, please?
