Abbreviations

My field of research is an abbreviation magnet. Since it covers two fields and both fields like to use abbreviations, some times my papers look like cleverly strung together abbreviations with plots. I know you aren't supposed to start sentences with an abbreviation technically. But! My two topics are usually only encountered as abbreviations after the first reference. Because they are topics, most of my sentences start with either one or the other abbreviation. I try to avoid it as much as I can, but the solution is either spell out the abbreviations or introduce sentences with some clause that mucks up the writing. So I am wondering what everyone else is doing with their abbreviations.
