"This is the problem with LJ -- we all think we are so close, and we know nothing about each other. I'm going to rectify it. I want you to ask me something you think you should know about me. Something that should be obvious, but you have no idea about. Then post this in your LJ and find out what people don't know about you ( Read more... )

Sorry for commenting on this ages old entry, but I just discovered your LJ and have really enjoyed reading it. Sorry also for commenting anonymously, but after reading other entries of yours, I wanted to stay as true as possible to the anonymous aspect of LiveJournal that seems so important to you.

There is, in fact, logic to spending $80 to $150 for a pair of jeans, far beyond impressing your friends, enemies, peers, and potential hook-ups at nightclubs. Fashion is truly an important part of American culture, not to mention an important part of Western Culture going as far back as the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Though no one actually buys the crazy ensembles exhibited during the big shows during Fashion Week, the designers still count on capitalism to keep them afloat. While much of their profit comes from little accesories (perfume, belts, socks, etc.), they still need to sell seemingly insiginificant articles of clothing (jeans, underwear, etc.) at high prices in order to create the truly extravagant looks in their big shows, which in several years may very well turn into standard fashion cliches. So, in spending $150 for a pair of jeans, you are supporting the fashion industry and helping to ensure that this important part of western culture doesn't disappear entirely (like so many other important aspects of western culture that today are only a shadow of what they used to be).

Also, have you actually tried on a pair of $150 jeans? That may also certainly change your attitude. I never at all cared for jeans until I found a pair of truly heavenly Kenneth Cole jeans that fit me unbelievably well and truly showcase all my assets and then some...

And here's another (related) question for you: Since it's been almost a year since you wrote this comment, have any of your thoughts on fashion changed since then? During your experience at college have you encountered anyone who has inspired you to change or update your look? That certainly happened to me throughout my years as an undergrad!!!
