What season is it??

You know its summer when its so warm you open both windows all the way, turn on two fans, and still fall asleep because its so balmy. You know its summer when you pass a shirtless tanned guy on Sheridan Road, and everyone he walking with is wearing sandals and showing their arms. You know its summer when you arouse two lying pooches as you roll by them in your scooter. You know its summer when people use towels not to dry off in the shower, but to sit on in the green lawn next to the Japanese magnolia with the pink blossoms and read The Da Vinci Code. You know its summer when the sun goes down after 7:30, and two hours later it is still 80 degrees.

Except that it is spring.

Witness the transformation of Evanston, from a snowy desolate locale, like something out of a Frost poem, to a hazy, happening place. I have never, ever, experienced -14 and 82 degrees in the same city before. It seems the only constant here is the wind. A couple of months ago--who am I kidding, just a week ago-- the wind was strong enough to chill bone. Now it is strong enough to sap the momentum of a baseball hit with maximum force so that it falls straight down onto second base.

Oh yeah, that was me on the scooter in the first paragraph, if you hadn't guessed. I picked out the blue Razor for just 30 bucks at the sports superstore in Belmont. The reason I got it was because I wanted to be able to get from Tech and back in 5 minutes. Joel W. saw it and simply said, 'Dan, you're gonna die.' So far I've practiced it in the hallway and taken it for a joyride up to Tech and back and even into downtown Evanston, with no fatalities.

Tomorrow I'll try it out during 'rush hour.' We'll see how it goes.
