Today the 4th floor hallway of Shephard Residential College was transformed. One by one, students made their way back to their rooms from Thanksgiving break, ending the four day period of quarantine for the handful of us--including me, Joel W., and Chris the RA--who stayed. The dorm slowly came to life as the familiar sounds of electric guitar playing, instant message alert chimes, and Frank Sinatra Christmas songs replaced the relative calm of sitcom laughtracks (from Joel's room) and my organ music from last week.

The hallway was visually transformed as well, starting with Joel W's room. He wrote on the whiteboard on his door:

Come see my room. It's a fucking Bloomingdales window! Oh, and did you see the tree?

Joel spent Thanksgiving lavishly decorating his room for the holidays. His wall is now covered with Christmas garland and rainbow lights, secured tastefully by mounting tape he bought at Osco. Hanging from the ceiling are some 25 candy canes, half a dozen ornaments, and about 80 hand made paper snowflakes--some of us contributed with our own folded and cut creations. And playing seemingly nonstop on his computer screen--Charlie Brown's Christmas Special. I didn't go as all out as Joel did, but I did hang lights and garland over my door. The symbolic flouting of the Christmas lights=fire hazard policy was an added bonus.

The centerpiece of the hall, however, is the little fake stolen lighted tree right outside Joel W's room. Everytime someone returned to the dorm from break, they'd stop to marvel at the tree, and Joel would repeat his story of how he and Sirena used wire cutters to remove it from its seat along the sidewalk in downtown Evanston, over by Clarke's.

"We had to nab the one on the end because that was the only one not in front of a security camera. Sirena cut it out, then I put it in a plastic bag and we just walked out of there."

I love this time of year.
