romeo and juliet captivated me, though i couldnt understand the language. it was great to watch just by its staging and acting. kind of like those nonenglish movies smc's foreign language lab has (as far as interest over intelligibility).

What is power?
Ability to act comes first to mind. Let’s examine this. Say Filbert, a wall-street colossus, as he shuffles along the sidewalk passes Gilbert - twenty months homeless - retrieves a dollar from his deep pockets and drops it in Gilbert’s empty can. Who has the power? Filbert could, with the swipe of a card, score an international first-class flight, another stone-studded ring or a new set of six synthetic breasts for his mother, wife and daughter. Immediately he seems to have quite a wide range of ability. Without leaving his seat, Gilbert, on the other hand, can place his head in as many positions as there are points one can subdivide his range of motion into. Infinity, really. Filbert can too. They both possess ability to master an infinite domain of possible action. Yet Gilbert shows “powerless” against Filbert. Why is one infinity better than another? Filbert’s actions are favorable, whereas Gilbert’s are not. Power itself is not an entity and is nowhere in existence; rather it marshals the value and classification of abilities; it polarizes an otherwise unintelligible, scattered and unfocused matrix of potential.

i bought a bike either yesterday or the day before and when the spring semester rolls around (and my schedule doesn't call for flying from distant location to distant location) i'll be taking that to work and smc. if my legs can take the journey to santa monica and back.
in any case, i feel good about this ecologically/planetologiaclly healthy event and for the first time in my life i'll get a leg workout.
