Once upon a time, when I was just a wee preteen, I had long hair. It went down to the middle of my back and it was fine and poker straight. But I took a freak turn in my head and decided to cut off my long locks of hair into a rediculously short bob. Leaving the salon I was very proud of my new 'do, but I cried myself to sleep that night. I missed my long hair. But I was appeased at school the next day when I created a sensation with my new style.
Six months later, I went back to the salon and decided to cut my hair even shorter! I had grown up with poker straight fine hair that hardly kept a curl. I was assured if I cut my hair into a pixie style, it would look cute - just in time for summer! Just like Winona Ryder, she said! The stylist lied. When she was done, I looked as if I stapled a brown brillo pad to my head. It was horrendous- Winona I was not. And I was not appeased at school the next day when I created a sensation with my new style.
By high school I had grown out my brillo pad into a respectable length, but because I am not adept at styling and err on the side of lazy, my now shoulder length hair was always back into a bun. Through the next four years I cut my hair often and the length ranged from a bob to shoulder length, as evident in my pictures. By late senior year, I had finally chopped off all my hair - again into a short cut. I was surprised at school the next day when there was no sensation over my new style.
That summer, I had accepted a job with the Dunes and found myself tramping through forest and sand nearly everyday. I also met a formidible foe - the tick. My hair, which had been chopped into a oddly styled pixie cut, became a pain to sift through every night in search for any possible tick infestations. So I went back to the stylist and told her to cut my hair like a boy's. I wanted short hair that was easy to clean of any possible tick infestations. And I enjoyed this style very much.
In college, the hair stayed short and in some cases got shorter when I got really mad. But it stayed short for several years.
After some time of having this short cut, I decided it was high time to have long hair again. So I grew it out. And ever since then, I've kept my hair reasonably long. But I am an restless person and find myself needing change from time to time, like many of us do. In an effort to keep from shedding and to ensure I was not mistaken for the lazy nitwit I was working with at the time, I cut my hair into a bob. Again.
My hair has returned to shoulder length since then and I find myself itching to take a pair of scissors and get my Winona cut that looks good on me. But I have been seesawing on the length. In my many searches, I've come across a picture of Rose McGowan ((Charmed, Grindhouse)) with a slighty shaggy short 'do. I have become tired of the constant shedding and the irrfutable truth that when it comes to hairstyle, all I know is ponytail and braid.
This is a less safe version of the bob I sported a year ago. I would not dye my hair, but I think I would like this cut very much. Its familiar territory with a different zest to it. What makes it even better is the fact that Rose and I sport a similar facial shape ((and I am not as round in real life as I am in that picture above)) and this is why I am convinced I will be able to pull this off. I can create the illusion of body because its layered more than my original bob. I think secretly I wish I was a pretty as Rose, but that could just be the mini Freud on my shoulder talking.
One of the reasons I've been thinking so much about my hair is because I have to come up with something for Ashley's wedding. We're getting our hair professionally done, so I won't look sloppy and ill-kept in the pictures. I am eternally grateful for Ashley's mother for finding a salon to do this for us. I figure if I keep my long hair, I'll just have them give me a sleek French Twist and I can use a decorative comb to add some pizazz. Beacuse, dear readers, it is a wedding and we always need some pizazz in a wedding.
If I should have short hair, I found the above at brides.com. Apparently I am a bohemian kind of bride. While my hair might be too short to do this exact style, this is the kind of look I am going for - soft, styled and not over the top. And believe me, there are plenty of over the top styles on this website. I would pair it with a slight headband with a small cluster of flowers on it. Ashley will be carrying Black Beauty Roses and Stephenotis in her bouquet and I'm sure the bridesmaids are carrying just the roses. I'd like to use the Stephenotis because they are small and descrete for a short hairstyle.
So my dear readers, this Hairy Story isn't completely over yet, but I think I might have news - and pictures - of what I decide.
To be Continued. . . .
